It Was a Very Good Year For Lycoming County Pools (sort of)

Overall, swimming infrastructure fared pretty well in Lycoming County in 2015 and for the future.  Sure, the South Williamsport Borough Council voted in April 2015 to close the South Williamsport Pool (see here) and the East End Pool in Williamsport did not reopen this year (closed in 2014, see here).

On the plus side, the Jersey Shore Boro Pool was renovated this year (see here)-pictures below, Williamsport's only outdoor pool underwent a major renovation, and the new Williamsport YMCA has a new pool.  In fact, this week's Williamsport Sun-Gazette has pictures of Williamsport's two swimming pools on yesterday's front page to highlight several major changes within the community.

Flashback Friday - The Start of the Lock Haven University Swim Team

Several years of blogging have occurred at the Jersey Shore Swim blog with over 1000 stories and articles posted.  With that in mind, the Jersey Shore Swim blog will occasionally pull out an occasional favorite or interesting item from the archives to share with readers (plus some interesting old stuff never posted) in a series called Flashback Friday.

Below is a newspaper clipping from  Lock Haven's December 19, 1947 The Express, where they talk about all the sports offerings at Lock Haven University (then called the State Teachers College at Lock Haven).  Buried in the article is the mention of the college's new swim team.  Note -this was the men's team (which is no longer in existence) with the thought of a women's team years down the road.

Lock Haven University Women's Swim Team Gives Back to Local Teams

In order for a YMCA swim meet to function, an army of volunteers is needed.  There are positions for officials, timers, concession stand workers, etc.  With all this work, it is often very hard for parents to sit and relax and watch thier kids swim.

At the Lock Haven YMCA v East Lycoming dual meet, the LHU Women's Swim Team gave the parents a huge break.  Eighteen parent volunteer timers were replaced by eighteen LHU swimmers.  What a treat! More on the story can be read here.

Flashback Friday - Jersey Shore's First High School Dual Meet Season, 1992

Several years of blogging have occurred at the Jersey Shore Swim blog with over 1000 stories and articles posted.  With that in mind, the Jersey Shore Swim blog will occasionally pull out an occasional favorite or interesting item from the archives to share with readers (plus some interesting old stuff never posted) in a series called Flashback Friday.

During the first several years of Jersey Shore High School pool's existence, only YMCA dual meets were available to the high school age swimmers.  Although unable to compete as a ' 'high school' team, they were able to compete individually in High School Districts the first few years.  The 91-92 team was the first team that competed in high school meets and was then able to swim in High School Districts as a true team.

Jersey Shore and Lock Haven YMCA Kick Off Swim Season

The Lock Haven Loggerheads YMCA Swim Team season kicked off their season last Saturday at Lock Haven University’s Zimmerli Pool against Jersey Shore with great success.  The early season competition allowed swimmers to see how the first few weeks of practice have prepared them for the upcoming season.  For coaches, the early season dual meets allow them to place swimmers in a wide variety of events to assess the various levels and abilities of their team and athletes. “Our summer swim season ended in late July and swimmers only started to filter back into the pool in September, said head coach Jim Merinar.  “I am always curious to see what a couple of weeks of practice can do.”

If the first meet is any indication for the Loggerheads, early season preparation has been very good.  A total of seventeen swimmers had fast enough times to qualify for March’s YMCA District Meet.   With several meets between now and then, the number of swimmers expected to qualify for Districts will grow.  Full results can be found here.

A few swimmers might have some tough choices on the events they want to swim in District Championships (2016 YMCA District Qualifying Times can be found here).  Of the seventeen Loggerhead swimmers that qualified, four did so in three different individual events.  While they can only swim three individual events at the District meet, they will be trying their hand at several other events during the next couple of months. Qualifying for numerous events will then allow them to choose their strongest events for championships.

Camryn Bair, within the 10-and-unders, showed her diversity by winning two of her events and qualifying in three different strokes; 50 breast, 50 fly, and 100 freestyle.  Age group teammate Ana Persun replicated the two wins but also qualified for three events; the 50 fly and 50 and 100 freestyle.

In the next age group up (12-and-unders), Lock Haven’s Meaghan Keegan took it to another level by not only qualifying in the 50 fly, 100 free, and the 200 individual medley, but also winning the three events.Of the qualifying pack, eight boys will be able to move on in March.  Parker Orndorf joined the three girls as a three time qualifier in the 50 breast, 50 free, and 100 free.

Jersey Shore YMCA had four swimmers qualify for Districts.  Brennan Warner posted three qualifying swims in the 50 free, 100 free, and the 100 breaststroke.

Lock Haven’s next meet will take place against East Lycoming on December 12.

Jersey Shore HS Swim Team Has New Coach at the Helm

The Jersey Shore High School Swim Team is ready to start the 2015-2016 with its 5th coach in several years.  Former JSHS swimmer and Lock Haven University alumni, Jenna Brooks will take over the program.  Below is a short bio of the new coach.

Like most families with multiple children, the youngest is often dragged along to the older kid’s activities.  So the same happened to the new Jersey Shore High School Swim Team coach, Jenna Brooks, when she started swim lessons at the age of 18 months.  “My parents put my older brothers in lessons so they put me in them as well.”

That foundation of swimming knowledge and techniques learned at an early age served her well over the years and various levels.  Brooks started swimming competitively at the age of 5 through the Jersey Shore YMCA team and summer recreation league, through high school, and capped it off with a stellar career at Lock Haven University.

With Jersey Shore High School, she was a 4-time District 4 qualifier with multiple titles in the 100 fly and several relays.  Those times and finishes were enough to get her multiple trips to PIAA States, with a podium finish in 2008 in the 200 medley relay.

Not content to call it quits, Brooks moved on to the next level.  “After high school I still had the passion for swimming and I was not ready to give it up. I had a lot of success in high school which allowed me to receive scholarship money which was another incentive to swim in college,” said Brooks.

Brooks started off at Bloomsburg University but transferred to Lock Haven University after the first year because of a change in majors.  It was not only a great fit academically but athletically.  Brooks went on to be a 3-time PSAC qualifier with two trips to the Division II NCAA Swimming Championships.  A 3rd place in finish at the 2010 NCAA Championship Meet garnered her All-American status.  “I am so happy that I chose to go to LHU because I wouldn't be where I am today if I didn't,” said Brooks.

She does recognize the importance of good coaching in the success of swimming.  Look no further than Brooks first swim lesson at 18 months of age.  “Betty Balzer was who my parents took me to for lessons and I continued to go to her for technique classes until I graduated from high school,” said Brooks.  “I owe recognition to all of the coaches that have played a role in coaching me or helping me become a better coach. Whether it was technique classes, YMCA, high school or college, they have all taught me something along the way to get me where I am today.”

Her coaching journey started two years ago, serving as an assistant under Williamsport High School head coach, Bill Keiser.  She has ambitious goals for her cadre of swimmers.   ‘I would like to qualify more athletes to districts and PIAA States, with higher finishes, said Brooks.  Her goal for herself is simple, “become a better coach since this year is my first year ever at being a head coach,” said Brooks.

Podium finish in for Lock Haven University in 200 medley relay at NCAA 2010 Championships, from left to right; Amanda Terray (backstroke), Brittany Rehrig (breaststroke), Jenna Brooks (butterfly), and Samantha Bekken (Durham) (freestyle)

The Jersey Shore's 2015-2016 YMCA winter swim season kicks off with a match-up against local rival, Lock Haven, on December 5.  In fact, the two teams will meet several other times this season; tri-meets with Ridgway in January and East Lycoming in February and CENKEY championships.

Their annual rivalry goes way back.  Below is a Lock Haven Express clipping from the 1984-85 YMCA swim meet season.  The 84-85 team was the first year of the Jersey Shore YMCA winter swim team.

Flashback Friday - Part 3 of Swimming Jargon Used in Central Pennsylvania - 'mermen'

  • Part 1 of Swimming Jargon Used in Central Pennsylvania - 'thumb jerkers' and 'thumbers' here
  • Part 2 of Swimming Jargon Used in Central Pennsylvania - 'tankers' here

As swimming was becoming more of a popular sport, colleges and universities were adding the activity to their list of varsity offerings.  Male athletes that participated in local competitive swimming at the time were called 'mermen'.  Below is a Lock Haven Express clipping from November 18, 1935 using the term 'mermen' for Penn State swimmers.

Lock Haven University (then called the Lock Haven Teachers College) also used the term 'mermen' below in a Lock Haven Express February 5, 1951 edition.

Jersey Shore Athletes Swim With the Pine Creek Hellbender

Shortly after the picture below was taken (Labor Day on Pine Creek in Lycoming County), several Jersey Shore swimmers (and other athletes) were made aware that a hellbender was lurking below.   After several minutes of watching this water creature move about, the group moved on down the creek.

Say what?  Not sure what a hellbender is?  Check out the following links to see what the swimmers observed on the creek bottom;

  • Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, here
  • Lycoming College, here
  • Allegheny Front, here

What an awesome mascot for a Pennsylvania swim team.  Could never understand why local teams picked sharks, stingrays, or loggerheads.  Anyone spot one of those in our local waters?

Flashback Friday - Part 2 of Swimming Jargon Used in Central Pennsylvania - 'tankers'

  • Part 1 of Swimming Jargon Used in Central Pennsylvania - 'thumb jerkers' and 'thumbers' here

Many early swimming pools looked like concrete tanks.  They didn't have the filtration systems nor the chemical treatments we have today.  They often relied on spring fed, and/or running water to keep them clean (fresh water coming into the tank pushed the old water out).  So those athletes that would swim in these type of contraptions were called 'tankers'.  There are still some swim clubs/colleges that call themselves 'tankers'.  The Jersey Shore swimmers also called themselves tankers for many years (now use mascot names).

Flashback Friday - Part 1 of Swimming Jargon Used in Central Pennsylvania - 'thumb jerkers' and 'thumbers'

Back in the day, people who hitchhiked where called 'thumbers' (because they stuck out their thumb to hitch rides).  During the summer months in the Lock Haven area, many of the youth would stick out their thumbs to get a ride to the local swimming hole.  Below is the newspaper editorial calling those youth heading to the water as 'thumb jerkers' (Lock Haven Express, June 20, 1936).

Apparently it was a cause for concern as some of the town leaders tried to use this as one (of the many) of the reasons to build a swimming pool for local youth.  Below is a newspaper clipping from the Lock Haven Express, January 9th, 1935 where page two of the article references the swimming 'thumbers' (circled in red).

Flashback Friday - The Last Days of the Bald Eagle Swim League

Several years of blogging have occurred at the Jersey Shore Swim blog with over 1000 stories and articles posted.  With that in mind, the Jersey Shore Swim blog will occasionally pull out an occasional favorite or interesting item from the archives to share with readers (plus some interesting old stuff never posted) in a series called Flashback Friday.

This past Saturday was the 3rd Greater Susquehanna Valley Aquatic League Championship meet for 13 teams.  Several of those teams swam in the old Bald Eagle Swim League (BESL) before it merged with the Susquehanna Valley Swimming and Diving League.  Below are the BESL Championship Meet covers of the last 7 years (2006 - 2012).
