Jersey Shore and Lock Haven YMCA Kick Off Swim Season

The Lock Haven Loggerheads YMCA Swim Team season kicked off their season last Saturday at Lock Haven University’s Zimmerli Pool against Jersey Shore with great success.  The early season competition allowed swimmers to see how the first few weeks of practice have prepared them for the upcoming season.  For coaches, the early season dual meets allow them to place swimmers in a wide variety of events to assess the various levels and abilities of their team and athletes. “Our summer swim season ended in late July and swimmers only started to filter back into the pool in September, said head coach Jim Merinar.  “I am always curious to see what a couple of weeks of practice can do.”

If the first meet is any indication for the Loggerheads, early season preparation has been very good.  A total of seventeen swimmers had fast enough times to qualify for March’s YMCA District Meet.   With several meets between now and then, the number of swimmers expected to qualify for Districts will grow.  Full results can be found here.

A few swimmers might have some tough choices on the events they want to swim in District Championships (2016 YMCA District Qualifying Times can be found here).  Of the seventeen Loggerhead swimmers that qualified, four did so in three different individual events.  While they can only swim three individual events at the District meet, they will be trying their hand at several other events during the next couple of months. Qualifying for numerous events will then allow them to choose their strongest events for championships.

Camryn Bair, within the 10-and-unders, showed her diversity by winning two of her events and qualifying in three different strokes; 50 breast, 50 fly, and 100 freestyle.  Age group teammate Ana Persun replicated the two wins but also qualified for three events; the 50 fly and 50 and 100 freestyle.

In the next age group up (12-and-unders), Lock Haven’s Meaghan Keegan took it to another level by not only qualifying in the 50 fly, 100 free, and the 200 individual medley, but also winning the three events.Of the qualifying pack, eight boys will be able to move on in March.  Parker Orndorf joined the three girls as a three time qualifier in the 50 breast, 50 free, and 100 free.

Jersey Shore YMCA had four swimmers qualify for Districts.  Brennan Warner posted three qualifying swims in the 50 free, 100 free, and the 100 breaststroke.

Lock Haven’s next meet will take place against East Lycoming on December 12.
