Which Logo Do You Prefer for the Jersey Shore Kid’s Triathlon

Here are five logos, designed by Todd Moore that Jersey Shore Borough officials and volunteers are looking at for the upcoming Jersey Shore Kid’s Triathlon. Note that only the logo in the upper left corner is in color. All logos can be done in color for posters and brochures. The logo must be in black and white for the T-shirt. For those not from the area the logos near the bottom incorporate a historical aspect of Jersey Shore, the Tiadaghton Elm.  See here for more details.

Rumor Around Town – Jersey Shore High School Pool Is CLOSING!

The rumor that is running wildfire through the Jersey Shore community is that the high school swimming pool might be closing.  The pool holds physical education classes throughout the school day and trains a successful high school swim team, not to mention the large after school YMCA swim program.  The Jersey Shore swim blog wonders if there are other land holdings and properties that are not used as extensively that are also on the chopping block?  In addition, are less successful athletic programs also being looked at?

Jersey Shore Community Swim Cancelled For This Weekend

Jersey Shore Community Swim cancelled for this weekend.

The pool has been repaired but has to under go inspection before open to the public and swimmers.  The inspection is scheduled for Monday and we hope to have the pool open for next Sunday.  Please check back in the middle of the week.

Jersey Shore Swimmers Finish Season With Strong Showing At YMCA States

Jersey Shore head coach, Patty Kennelley, announced her upcoming retirement from the sport to her swimmers several weeks ago. This past weekend at YMCA States was bittersweet as it was her last walk on a pool deck as a coach. She will walk into retirement with good memories over the many seasons and was able to exit the sport with a state champion swimmer under her belt.

The stage was set when Emma Butzler swam the 10-and-under girls 50 yard butterfly at YMCA Western Districts on March 13th and finished second to Allison Ahl of Corry YMCA by 34/100s of a second. Her finish was fast enough to qualify her for States but it also seeded her second to Ahl in the upcoming event.

The final heat and top seeds of the 50 fly at States went off fast as all swimmers had clean starts. Butzler moved down the lane, slightly ahead of Ahl but trailing behind Phoenixville YMCA’s Erin Merke. Coming out of the turn, Butzler pulled even with Merke and neither swimmer could create any separation as they swam the final length. It was a splash of water as the three top seeds lunged toward the wall. Spectators and officials could not visually see who touched the wall first and all eyes turned to the timing board at Penn State’s McCoy Natatorium to see the results. The timer had Butzler on top at 30.68 seconds, 2/100s of a second ahead of Merke and 22/100s in front of Ahl. It was the closest race over the two day, 72 event swim meet.

In addition to her butterfly win, Butzler placed fifth in the 100 yard freestyle. She finished her day by joining teammates Sam Keegan, Riley Markley, and Ashlyn Wool for a sixteenth place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Although Keegan dropped times in her individual races, she just finished out of the point race with a 13th and 16th in her 50 yard breaststroke and 100 yard individual medley.

Shore swimmer Maddi Thompson was also on the medal podium with a 5th and 10th place finish in the girls 15-and-over 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. She also swam with teammates BethAnn Schwoyer, Gabby Rossman, and Lindsay Dudek to place 14th in the 400 yard medley relay. Schwoyer captured 25th in the 100 yard backstroke and 14th in the 500 yard freestyle.

Brothers Cody and Chet Schwoyer along with Tyler Sheets and Evan Moore finished 21st in the 14-and-under boys 200 yard medley relay and 22nd in the 200 freestyle relay. Each member of those relays swam one individual event as Chet was 32nd in the 200 yard freestyle, Cody was 31st in the 100 yard backstroke, Moore was 29th in the 100 yard butterfly, and Tyler Sheets was 26th in the 50 yard freestyle. On the girls side, Hannah Runtas finished 36th in the 50 yard freestyle.

Jacob Butzler was Shore’s sole representative in the 12-and-under category and placed 22nd in the 200 yard freestyle.

Lock Haven’s YMCA has two state qualifiers, Nolan Dale in the boys 14-and-under boys finished 33rd in the 50 yard freestyle while his brother, Ethan finished 24th in the boys 12-and-under 50 yard breaststroke.

Lock Haven Area Swimming- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Maybe the blog title should read "Lock Haven Area Swimming - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly".

Nice article in March 22, 2011 edition of the Lock Haven Express detailing a swimming duel between two area swimmers at the Zoltoski Memorial.  http://www.lockhaven.com/page/content.detail/id/530331/The-senior-vs--freshman-swimmer.html?nav=5080

Although not bad, it is certainly ugly.  The March 23, 2011 edition of the Lock Haven Express talks about the Mill Hall project moving forward.  The article talks about all the potential problems, landmines, and issues with this project as it moves forward.  http://www.lockhaven.com/page/content.detail/id/530338/Project-Pool-is-all-or-nothing-gamble.html?nav=5009

One Rises, The Other Falls

Last year, the Borough of South Williamsport closed their outdoor pool because of some badly needed upgrades.  There was concern by some residents that if it was closed and mandated repairs were not made, then the pool would be closed forever.  A group - Save the South Williamsport Pool - formed and began raising money for the upgrades. An offshoot of the group, the non-profit South Williamsport Youth Fund, was created to take fundraising efforts to another level.

Ad in Williamsport Sun Gazette
The community effort with backing of local officials who wanted the pool showed what can be done.  Advertisements appeared in local papers as positions needed to be filled for the upcoming summer swim season.  Kudos to the efforts of S. Williamsport's local citizens and borough officials who have provided summer recreation to their youth.

Contrast that effort to the mess that is occurring just west in the neighboring county.  The future of the only outdoor pool in the Mill Hall/ Lock Haven Area is hanging by a thread.  The project that has been in the planning stage for four and a half years is now running out of time. A Lock Haven Express article in yesterday's paper was titled 'Project Pool in Peril'.  More information can be found here.

Swim Clinics

Does your swimmers need a little extra work on flip turns?  Does she need to fine turn her butterfly?  Does he want to get a start on the summer swim season?

There are two opportunities for local swimmers to learn new stroke techniques, racing starts, turns, and finishes.  Both opportunities are in Lock Haven; one at Lock Haven University (Haven Swim School) and the other at the Lock Haven YMCA (Lock Haven YMCA Competitive Swim Clinic).  Click on images to enlarge the documents.
