Shore Swims Away With Numerous Titles at 2012 BESL Championships

Jersey Shore's 12-and-under girls dominated the local competition during the Bald Eagle Swim League's (BESL)dual meet season as the group has out-scored their age group opponents 292-65.  Looking at it from another angle, they placed first in all their individual events this summer swim season but one (29 out of 30).  That one sole miss came in a breaststroke dual where Wellsboro's Jillian Berguson out-touched Shore's Sam Keegan by 43/100s of a second.  The 2012 BESL Championships at the Jersey Shore Borough Pool brought the two together again in the final heat of the 50 yard breaststroke.  This time, Keegan was able to out-touch Berguson for first place by 22/100s of a second.

Keegan's teammates left no room for anyone else in the 12-and-under  age group to take any of the individual events.  Emma Butzler won the 100 yard freestyle and individual medley and the 50 yard butterfly and Gabbie Moore captured the 50 yard backstroke and freestyle.  The three also came together, with teammate Kendra White, to win the 200 medley relay.
Jersey Shore's 15-and-over Zack Lehman takes a
glance at his competitor, Andy Heilmann of
Loyalsock, in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Several other Jersey Shore swimmers won titles throughout the course of the day.   Wellsboro captured every event in the 10-and-under boys but the 25 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle, which were won by Shore's Alex Butzler.

Luke Engle won narrowly, 41/100s of a second, over Wellsboro's Evan Bair in the 14-and-under 50 yard butterfly.    He also anchored the winning 200 yard freestyle relay of Max Mason, Michael Panczyszyn, and Cullen Berfield.

One of the closest races of the day took place with the 10-and-under girls 100 medley relay.  Jersey Shore's Isabella Hale, Isabelle Griswold, Taylor Fleming, and Jordan O'Connor were seeded second to Wellsboro but snagged the title by only 3/100s of a second.
The Lock Haven Loggerheads took third place in the Championship meet overall, which was their best finish in over a decade on the back of several successful swims.  Their whole day got off to a surprising start in the meet's first event where their 12-and-under boys were seeded over 30 seconds behind top seed Wellsboro.  The team of Thomas Cygan, William Logan, Jonas Tomalonis, and Jordy Sheets surged to a win by over  ten seconds in the 200 medley relay.

It was a similar scenario for the Loggerheads 15-and-over boys where they were seeded behind both Loyalsock and Wellsboro.  The foursome of Jordan Suter, Josh Cram, Tyler Sheets, and Ben Jones dropped over five seconds to leap over the two top seeds in the 200 medley relay.  Cram went on to win the 100 yard breaststroke.
Jersey Shore's 15-and-over Alaniah Rosencrance
in the freestyle leg of her 100 yard individual medley.
The younger age groups also contributed to the team tally.  Lock Haven's 8-and-under boys 100 yard freestyle relay of Leisher Gugino, Simon Lins, Will Straley, and Owen Persun came from the number two slot to upend top seed Wellsboro.  Persun also won individual titles in the 25 yard freestyle and backstroke.

The on the girls side, the Loggerhead's 8-and-unders of Haley Shadle, Caitlyn Dale, Madison Bair, and Hannah Brian upset Jersey Shore to take the 100 yard medley relay.  Shadle, Emily Bartlett, Bair, and Brian finished off their day by dropping over  five seconds in the 100 yard freestyle relay and capturing the race over Wellsboro.  In between the two relays, Shadle captured the 25 yard backstroke.

Jersey Shore's 12-And-Unders On A Roll

Jersey Shore's 12-and-under girls should have the slogan 'Bring It On' emblazoned on their swim caps. After four dual meets, including Wellsboro this past Thursday night (July 12), the group has out-scored their age group opponents 233-50. Looking at it from another angle, they have placed first in almost all their individual events this summer swim season (23 out of 24) and taken the top spot in every single relay race (8).

Wellsboro, last year's Bald Eagle Swim League (BESL) regular season champs and Championship winners travelled into the western portion of Lycoming County on Thursday night for a showdown of the league's two top teams. Ignoring the hype , Shore's 12-and-under girls just went about their business. That is not to say Wellsboro's girls didn't try.

Wellsboro's 12-and-under girls opening 200 medley relay swam fast, so fast that they broke their own team record for the event. Not a problem for the black and orange foursome of Gabbie Moore, Sam Keegan, Emma Butzler, and Kendra White as they were busy pushing their own pace out front, resulting in a new BESL record. "Several of these girls go to camps, clinics, and practices outside the community for extra work throughout the year", said coach Dave Keegan. "and they are aerobically fit and have an efficient stroke". "That efficiency in the water translates into speed", he said.

Maybe it was the tough competition that pushed the girls to swim fast, but it seemed to work. White and Briar Lehman set the pace for the start of the individual events of the evening by taking first and third in the 50 yard freestyle. Then more records started to fall. Team records were set by Butzler in the 100 yard individual medley, Moore in the 50 yard backstroke, and Keegan in the 50 yard breaststroke. The final score for the age group was 45-29.
Fast start to the girls 12-and-under individual medley.

While the 12-and-under's score wasn't ever in question, the 10-and-under girls were in the fight of their summer swim season. Right off the bat, Wellsboro took first in the opening 100 yard medley relay but was only able to pick up a one point lead as Shore's quartets of Isabella Hale, Isabelle Griswold, Taylor Fleming, and Jordon O'Connor and Allison Moore, Emily Lehman, Natalie Charnego, and Sadie Griswold finished second and third respectively. Isabelle Griswold propelled Jersey Shore back into the lead by beating Wellsboro's top freestyle sprinter in the 25 yard freestyle back half a second.

The lead was short lived as Wellsboro immediately regained the lead with a win in the next event, the 100 yard individual medley. It took a 1-3 finish by O'Connor and Hale in the 25 yard backstroke to push Shore back into the lead. They would maintain a thin lead throughout the rest of the meet heading into the final individual event where the lead was lost when Wellsboro won the 25 yard fly.

The only way Shore's 10-and-unders could win was to take first and prevent Wellsboro from taking second and third in the final relay. Isabella Griswold, Hale, O'Connor, and Fleming took care of the first part of the equation by beating Wellsboro's top 100 yard freestyle relay by 12/100s of a second. But it was Jersey Shore's number two relay that secured the 38-36 win. Sadie Griswold, Allison Moore, Gabbie Bellomo, and Charnego prevented Wellsboro from taking third place by finishing ahead of Wellsboro's number two relay by almost two seconds. "These girls swam with a sense of urgency tonight, said Coach Keegan. "The competition pushed them and pushed them hard".

Jersey Shore also went on to win the girls 8-and-unders but Wellsboro won the dual meet 7-3. Jersey Shore ends their dual meet season on Tuesday night against Tri-Town followed by BESL Championships on June 21.

Remember When...South Williamsport Used To Have A Summer Swim Team

Below is a newspaper clipping from 30 years ago highlighting swimming performances in a match-up betwen South Williamsport and Jersey Shore on July 1, 1982.  Interestingly enough, the pool is still there but apparantly not enought kids to fill out a swim team.  You wonder if there might not be enough kids now that Williamsport's Memorial Park pool is closed (either until renovation or forever).  Click newspaper clipping to enlarge.  Clipping courtesy of Steve Sheets family)

Splash Bash

Numerous Jersey Shore swimmers joined a good number of Lock Haven and Juniata Valley swimmers at the First Splash Bash at Rec Park in Lewiston.  It was a good, low key, relaxing atmosphere as kids got to swim different events they normally don't swim or try events that they don't encounter during the summer swim season (such as the 200 IM).

Results can be viewed here.

Below are a few pictures of the day but you can go here to view many more.

synchronized breaststroke turns for Sam Keegan
(upper swimmer) and Kendra White (lower) in the girls 11-12 100
meter individual medley

It's hard to say who is more intense, Lake Merryman getting ready to dive in for his part of the 100 meter freestyle relay or volunteer timer and mom.
Parents that volunteer together stay together.  Swim parents Brain
White (turn official) and wife Michelle (timer) during a break in the action.

Shore Swims to 5-5 Tie With Loyalsock

Jersey Shore's win over Loyalsock last year is a distant memory and reality set in this past Tuesday night as the two clubs swam to a 5-5 tie.  Shore's older age groups had difficulty matching up with Loyalsock's swimmers, losing three out of the four older age groups (Jersey Shore was only able to win the boy's 14-and-unders).   The middle age group, the 12-and-unders was split with Jersey Shore winning the girls and Loyalsock taking the boys.
Shore’s 14-and-under Olivia Edler on her way
to a win in the 100 yard individual medley.
She would also go on to win the 50 and 100
yard freestyle.

But if anything, the future looks very promising as the black and orange carried three out of the four younger age groups (losing only the 10-and-under boys).  They were especially dominant in the 8-and-unders, capturing both the boys and girls age groups in convincing fashion. "We have some good swimmers in the older age groups but lacking depth" says Jersey Shore coach Patty Kennelley, "but we have a growing youth movement that is very deep".  "We have our A, B, and C swimmers to fill out the line-up but then have to swim several exhibitions in most events to get other younger kids some race experience".

The 8-and-under girls were able to capture first place in every event on way to a 45-7 win.  Their evening kicked into high gear when the medley relay of Courtney Lehman, Sarah Misquitta, Meaghan Keegan, and Lily Dincher won with a time of 1:41.70.

They carried this momentum forward into the individual events as they took all three top spots in the 25 yard freestyle with Raven Windecker, Misquitta, and Dincher.  Adalynn Wall followed that shortly with top honors in the 25 yard back stroke.  It was another 1-2-3 finish in the 25 yard breaststroke for Keegan, Misquitta, and Dincher respectively.  Those three partnered with Lehman to win the 100 yard freestyle relay with teammates Wall, Mackenzie Gardner, Justyce Wampler, and Windecker taking second.

It was a bit tougher for the 8-and-under boys en-route to a 30-21 win.  The four individual events were split evenly with Shore's Bellomo brothers, Nick and Peter, winning the 25 yard freestyle and breaststroke respectively.  'Socks Roman Micozzi and Aaron Baker won the 25 yard backstroke and butterfly respectively.

The boys advantage was in the relays where Owen Staggert, P. Bellomo, Ethan Johnson, and N. Bellomo won the 100 yard medley relay and the Bellomo boys along with Staggert and Trey Berfield won the final 100 yard freestyle relay in convincing fashion.  Teammates Luke Welshans, Johnson, Nick Canellos, and Lake Merryman added an extra point in the final relay with a third place finish.
Loyalsock’s  15-and-over, Shaun Smith, on his way to a win in the 200 yard individual medley.  He would also go on to win the 100 yard butterfly.

Reason #32 On Importance of Learning To Swim - Swimming With The Horses

This is a continuing series in why everybody should learn how to swim as many activities take place around water.

There are very few places where wild horses roam the US but Assateague Island in Maryland is one of those places.  Swimmers and horses are often on the beach together (these are wild horses and like any other wild animal, it is best to keep a certain distance apart).   Check out this site for more info, http://www.nps.gov/asis/naturescience/horses.htm

Shore Swimmers Promote Swimming In Community

Jersey Shore swimmers promoted the sport of swimming by participating in the July 5th Town Meeting Parade through 'downtown' Jersey Shore. The theme of their float was a USA – Olympic theme meet with kids wearing red, white, blue and their medals.

The pool staff joined the swimmers this year. The team distributed the tri/winter flyers, pool staff distributed free day passes to the pool and the kids all threw candy.  It was over 90 degrees at the start of the parade.
Below are a few pictures taken by swim parent Shelley Moore of the evening's activities.

Could You Swim 32 Miles In Cold Dark Water With Lamprey Eels?

Looking for a really cool movie for swimmers and swimming parents to watch?  Check out Heart: The Marilyn Bell Story.  It's about a sixteen year old girl who swims across Lake Ontario (32 MILES!) and her battle with the elements, lamprey eels, and exhaustion.  It is also really interesting to see the mind games that her coach plays to get the most out of Marilyn.  You can check out some info here on Marilyn and here for the movie.

Jersey Shore Squeaks By Lock Haven

The 10-and-under girls 25 yard backstroke
start off the blocks

One of Lock Haven’s largest teams in recent history visited Jersey Shore in an early season matchup but ultimately fell short in a 6-4 loss.  Shore was able to capture all the girl’s age groups while Lock Haven took all the male categories except for the 14-and-unders. “It wasn’t too long ago that Lock Haven was the perennial doormat in the Bald Eagle Swim League, losing many of the meets 10-0”, said head coach Joel Blesh.  “Not only are we competitive now, but we are building their skills and these kids are coming together as a team, having fun, and swimming fast”.

The future looks promising for the Lock Haven Loggerheads, especially with the young swimmers coming up in the 8-and-under boys.   They were able to capture all first place finishes in the relays and individual events.  The group was especially dominating in the 25 yard backstroke as Owen Persun, Will Straley, and Simon Lins swept the event.  Persun also picked up the win in the 25 yard freestyle with teammates Leisher Gugino and Straley locking up first place in the 25 yard breaststroke and butterfly respectively.

Shore’s depth in the 10-and-under girls propelled them to their second win in as many meets.  Their dominance started and ended with the relays.  Jordan O’Connor, Briar Lehman, Taylor Fleming, and Sadie Griswold touched out Lock Haven by over two seconds in the opening 100 yard medley relay.  O’Connor and Fleming then teamed up with Isabelle Hale and Isabelle Griswold to finish off the night with a win in the 100 yard freestyle relay over Shore’s number two and second place relay (Gabbie Bellomo, Allison Moore, Marissa Brady, and S. Griswold) and Lock Haven’s Morgan Brian, Leslie Shadle, Makayla Sampson, and Samantha Uhler.  “These girls are starting to grasp the importance of times and speed,” said Jersey Shore coach Dave Keegan “and becoming more aware of pool and league records.”  “It’s nice to see them realize the potential they have on this team and within their age-group.”

Lock Haven’s Avery Mahoney out in front of
Shore swimmer Isabelle Griswold in the girls 10-and-under
50 freestyle.
In between the relays, they split the individual events (three apiece) with Lock Haven as the black and orange took the majority of second and third place finishes.  Haven’s Shadle touched out all swimmers in the 25 yard freestyle but Shore’s I. Griswold and G. Bellomo prevented any other Lock Haven swimmers from picking up points by finishing second and third respectively.  The same scenario played out in the 50 yard freestyle where Lock Haven’s Avery Mahoney touched the wall first shortly followed by Shore’s I. Griswold and S. Griswold.

Shore’s 12-and-under girls continued their assault on league and pool records.  Gabbie Moore, Sam Keegan, Emma Butzler, and Kendra White set new league records in the 200 yard medley and freestyle relays (from 1996 and 2007 respectively).  Butzler also broke the pool record from 2007 in the 50 yard freestyle.
