Jersey Shore Swimmer Wins Title at YMCA States

Emma Butzler was part of a contingent of six Jersey Shore swimmers that advanced to YMCA States this past weekend at Penn State’s McCoy Natatorium.  Her season ending swims propelled her onto the podium three times over the course of the meet.

Butzler’s first race, the 100 yard butterfly, was against nationally ranked Marget Shelly of Chambersburg.  Butzler took the race out fast and was ahead of Shelly at the fifty yard mark by 2/10s of a second but was unable to keep the fast pace and fell slightly behind in the second fifty yards.  Shelly touched the wall about a second ahead of Butzler, who took second overall.

to take the 50 yard butterfly at YMCA States
Butzler’s next race, the 50 yard butterfly, was one she had won back at the 2011 YMCA States.  This event had her as the race favorite and she did not disappoint the small Jersey Shore crowd.  First off the starting block and into the water, she led the whole race to the wall and dropped 29/100s of a second to capture the state title.

Her final race of the day was in the 200 yard individual medley where she was a second seed to Ally Armbruster of Boyertown YMCA.  Her first leg of the race, the butterfly, had her out in front of the field by 1.2 seconds but started losing ground in her backstroke.  She lost a little more ground to Armbruster in the breaststroke and started to close the gap in the freestyle but ran out of water to finish second.

Shore’s other point winner was 10-and-under, Taylor Fleming, who finished tenth in the 50 yard butterfly and also swam the 100 yard individual medley later in the meet.  Jersey Shore just missed placing another swimmer when Gabbie Moore dropped 3.64 seconds in the 200 yard backstroke to finish thirteenth.   Other teammates that made YMCA States were Sam Keegan in the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke, Jordan O’Connor in the 100 backstroke, Isabelle Griswold in the 50 breaststroke.

Lock Haven’s sole representative was Ethan Dale who swam the 100 yard breaststroke and placed top twenty.

Central Mountain Boys Bring Home The Silver

Central Mountain PIAA Swimming – District 6-9 – AAA Championships

BOYS
As the waves settled at Penn State’s McCoy Natatorium during the District VI AAA Swimming and Diving Regional Championships, the Central Mountain High School Swim Team successfully showcased their talents with the team walking away with seven podium appearances,  four school records broken, and an overall second place finish in the two day event, the first in Central Mountain history.

“Unreal!!! The most decorated swim team in Central Mountain history. What an incredible feat for our handful of boys to outscore big schools, like Altoona, Hollidaysburg, Mifflin County and Tyrone”, said Coach Carol Matheney. “I am definitely more than pleased with the way everyone swam.”

Right from the start, the Central Mountain boys were there to make a statement, dominating early in the 200 Yard Medley Relay (team of Phil Rodo, Josh Cram, Jordan Suter and Tyler Sheets).  They placed second ahead of tough competitor Altoona with a time of 1:48:24, earning them a much deserved place on the podium, a silver medal, and a new school record.
The Boys Relay team of (top) Jordan Suter,
Phil Rodo (Bottom) Josh Cram & Tyler Sheets

“Terrific competition”, Coach Matheny said.  “I am very proud of what the team has accomplished, no matter the situation; these swimmers believe they will find a way to win.”

The energy continued into the 200 Yard Freestyle as Jordan Suter, who was seeded seventh going into the event, defeated Kyle Heasley from Altoona.  He earned a spot on the podium by placing sixth, which qualified him for the YMCA District level.  Teammate Tyler Sheets swam his personal best at 2:01:43, placing eighth, and depositing additional points on the score board for the Wildcats.

In the 200 Yard IM the Wildcats powered through the water and saw three swimmers place in the top ten. Senior Josh Cram, who was seeded sixth leading into the event, managed to defeat Evan Becker from Mifflin County, earning a spot on the podium by placing fifth.  Nolan Dale placed seventh, with a time of 2:19:85, qualifying for the YMCA District level; Brandon Kibler placed ninth.

The impetus continued during the 50 Yard Freestyle as Phil Rodo netted himself a sixth place finish,  earning a spot on the podium with a time of 22:96, while teammate Tyler Sheets placed first in his heat and eighth overall with a  24.38.  This career-best record also qualifies for the YMCA District level.  Rodo, with still enough gas in his tank, broke the CMHS record, held by Andrew Barrett, in his 100 Yard Freestyle placing eighth with a time of 1:00:09.

after earning two silver medals in the PIAA District IV
Swimming & Diving Championships
The day ended with an exciting, nail biting, finish in the boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.  The relay team of Tyler Sheets, Josh Cram, Jordan Suter and Phil Rodo, were seeded third, less than two seconds behind second seed Altoona. Sheets shot off the block possessing a very close tight race with tough competitors Altoona and Hollidaysburg on his heels with a 24.52 split. Cram fought hard to maintain the Wildcats position with a time of 24.14, but Altoona and Hollidaysburg had other plans.  Suter had his work cut out for him if the Wildcats were to get on the podium.  Suter responded, charging through the waters with a 23.75, allowing senior Phil Rodo to maintain the momentum and sprint home not only with a new school record, but earning the boys another silver medal,  with a freestyle split of 22.60.

“That was one of the most exciting races I have seen all year swimming,” said Coach Carol Matheney. “It wasn’t the time, it wasn’t where they placed and it wasn’t even the new school record that impressed me the most. It was hard-fought. The kids were in this for themselves. It was a fitting finish for an emotional season.”

As the doors opened to McCoy Natatorium on day two of the PIAA championship swimming,  the Central Mountain Wildcats found themselves in a situation they have never been in before,  second place overall in the competition. They knew they had to further establish their dominance by continuing to add points on the scoreboard.
The 400 Yard Freestyle team of Brandon Kibler, Nolan
Dale, Ben Jones, Ethan Dale discuss last minute
strategies before their race
In the 100 Yard Freestyle, Sophomore Nolan Dale earned himself an eighth place finish with a time of 55:53 followed by Benjamin Jones who placed ninth. Both Wildcats answered the call and collectively added more points to Central Mountain scoreboard. Jordan Suter, who was seeded eighth going into the 500 Yard Freestyle, shocked the CM fans as he swept through the waters, passing swimmers from Altoona and Hollidaysburg to earn a fifth place berth on the podium with a 5:22:91. Sophomore Brandon Kibler dug deep, dropping three seconds off his seed time, adding some points for the Wildcats by placing seventh in the 100 Yard Backstroke, and qualifying for the YMCA District level.  Three Wildcats qualified for the 100 Yard Breaststroke event: Josh Cram earning a sixth place spot and breaking his own school record, followed by teammate Ben Jones in seventh and freshman Ethan Dale,  who out swam Altoona sophomore Dima Kunstbeck, to secure an eighth place finish. The day concluded as the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team (Jones, E. Dale, Kibler and N. Dale) showcased their abilities by adding the final points for the Wildcats placing fourth.

GIRLS
With depth being in an issue all season long, the Wildcats pushed through with their tough competitors in the 200 Yard Medley Relay (team of Bethany Barrett, Hannah Williams, Hannah Worden and Katie Tolomay) but fell short, placing fifth.  Teammates Barrett and Williams tried to get some points up on the scoreboard for the girls, but placed 11 & 12 respectively in their 50 Yard Freestyle. Hannah Williams powered through the waters during the 200 Yard Freestyle relay with a split time of 20.45 to earn her teammates a fifth place finish, just three seconds behind Mifflin County. Senior Bethany Barrett rallied during her 100 Yard Backstroke and placed seventh giving the lady Wildcats some much needed points. The day ended with Williams placing eleventh in her 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:32:52.

“We really focused this year on training both mentally and physically to swim fast no matter whom our competition was”, said Volunteer Coach, Steve Sheets.  “In the past, we wouldn’t swim our best if we knew the other team was better than us, but this year we really turned the corner on the mental aspect of swimming your best in every race”, said Sheets.  “Both the boys and girls team improved at this, and they really demonstrated it during our regular season, (with a new Central Mountain school record of 8-4-1), and at districts with a second place finish, that they did not want to leave each other down.”

Three Lock Haven YMCA Swimmers Win Pentathlon

Eight central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim Teams competed in the Zoltoski Pentathlon on February 23 at Lock Haven University’s Zimmerli Pool with several Lock Haven and Jersey swimmers walking away with top honors. This is a meet where each athlete competes in five events; the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley (IM) to determine the meet’s best all-around swimmer. The first four events are randomly seeded and the last swim of the day, the IM, is seeded based on the overall time of the first four swims. The overall Pentathlon winners are determined by adding the five times for each swimmer, with the lowest combined time winning. A swimmer must successfully complete swims in all five events to be eligible for final scoring.

The closest contest occurred in the boys 14-and-under age group where Lock Haven swimmer, Ethan Dale, had a combined time from the five events just 5/100s of a second faster than Bellefonte’s Tommy Hall. Hall won four of the five events; the 100 yard fly (by 5.39 seconds), 100 back (by .60 secs), 100 free (by .92 secs), and the IM (by .52 secs) but it was the 100 yard breaststroke that propelled Dale to the podium. His winning time was 7.48 seconds faster than Hall which was enough, when added to the other four times, to have the lowest combined times at the end of the day.

Lock Haven Y swimmer, Phil Rodo, had an equally exciting afternoon as his combined time in the boy’s 15-and-over grouping was only 6/100s of a second faster than Juniata Valley’s Evan Becker. Rodo won the 100 fly, back, and free while Becker took the 100 breast and 200 IM. Lock Haven’s Tyler Sheets came in third.

Lock Haven’s other winner was in the boys 8-and-under with Simon Lins combined time for the five events propelling him over East Lycoming’s Evan Hamm by 65/100s of a second. Ryan Hause of Danville tied up third place.

The most exciting age group of the afternoon was with girl’s 10-and-under age group where 22 swimmers battled for the top spots. It was a jumble of placings throughout the five events with Bellefonte’s Sophie Gerhart, Brookeville’s Alayna Murray, and Jersey Shore’s Taylor Fleming eventually taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively in combined times. Fleming won the fly (Gerhart 2nd and Murray 3rd), Gerhart the back (Murray 3rd and Fleming 4th) and free (Murray 2nd and Fleming 4th), and Murray the breast (Fleming 4th and Gerhart 5th) and IM (Fleming 2nd and Gerhart 3rd).

There were no such close calls for Jersey Shore’s Kendra White and Sam Keegan. White dominated the 14-and-under girl’s competition by winning all five events in commanding fashion. Keegan squared off against seventeen other swimmers and she too prevented any swimmer from taking the top spot in any of the five events.

Jersey Shore Swimmer Excelling as Freshman at Naval Academy

Maddie Thompson, from Jersey Shore, is having a very nice year as a freshman at the US Naval Academy.  Her swimming accomplishments are mentioned here and here from the Patriot League Championship in Lewisburg, PA.

Maddie was also selected for the All-Patriot League Team.  Both the first and second teams consist of 18 members, with more added if there are any ties. All individual event champions automatically earn first-team recognition, with the remaining first-team positions completed based upon individual event points scored during the championship. All individual event second-place swimmers and divers not already appearing on the first team are then placed onto the second team. The remainder of the second team is also rounded out by use of the next highest individual event point tallies.

Headlining the women's list is Laura Gorinski (Sr., Greensburg, Pa.), who won three events to earn the league's swimmer-of-the-year accolade for a second-straight season. She picked up wins in both breaststroke events and in the 200 individual medley final. Those three wins raised her career total to 11 (in 12 career races), which is the most event titles won by a male or female swimmer in league history.

Also earning automatic placement onto the first team were Rachael Dudley (Fr., Hoschton, Ga.), who won the 500 free; Toni Paruso (Sr., Savannah, Ga.), who won the 100 fly; and Rheanna Vaughn (Jr., Aliso Viejo, Calif.), the winner of the 200 fly. Garnering first-team accolades based upon their respective point totals were Maddie Thompson (Fr., Jersey Shore, Pa.), Ellen Bradford (Fr., Knoxville, Tenn.) and Ange Sawick (So., Abington, Pa.).
