Each coach presented a Coach’s Award. A swimmer they felt needed to be recognized not only for their achievements but their effort they put into the sport.
Assistant Lee Thompson selected Danny Pellacore for several reasons. “In addition to coming to almost all the practices, he was always cheering on his teammates”, said Thompson.
Assistant Coach Steve Sheets gave the nod to Derek McPherson. “He showed great improvement in the pool and beyond”, said Sheets. “He was struggling with his strokes the last week, but buckled down, recognized what he was doing wrong, and made corrections”
Coach Patty Kennelley nominated Maddi Thompson because “she comes to the pool everyday, always helps out, and does everything you ask her to do.”
Kennelley then took the microphone to say thanks to several people. She started off by thanking her husband and daughter as she knows her role takes her away from the home during the season. A bit emotional, she recognized that her daughter’s swimming career in Jersey Shore is finished with the end of this summer swimming season.
Patty also thanked her two assistant coaches, Steve Sheets and Lee Thompson, for their role in a strong program. She also thanked the Summer Swim Team Board for their effort in allowing for a functioning swim team. Food is always a big part of an event and she thanked Diane Johnson and her crew for providing good eats for not only the swim meets but the Dip N Dances and Flick N Float. Patty recognized Diane’s husband for his role and support.
Patty moved onto several volunteers for their role in the Summer Swim Team season:
Tom Butzler – writing articles for the local papers and coordinating some of the social events
Todd Moore – Instrumental in many design aspects (t-shirts, banners, record board, etc). In charge of the Town Meeting float which won third place.
Dave Keegan – helped with practice everyday, set-up the pool for practices and meets
Ed Haltenhoff – Instrumental with new swimmers, giving them encouragement, and getting into the water for several demonstrations.
Shelley Moore – Natural with little kids and helped out a lot with that age group in practices.
Chris Naugle – Not only on the Summer Swim Team board but was on hand at many practices to “lend a hand”
All three coaches cannot manage every swimmer during a meet so they rely on Age Group Captains to make sure the younger kids make their events. The following individuals were recognized as Age Group Captains; Courtney Breon, Tyler Sheets, Sapphire Naugle, Danny Glenn, Sophie Hatalsky, Brooklyn Hillyard, Brittany Younkin, Jamie Mason, Lyndsay Dudek, Kaytie Helsel, Kortnee Blair, and Toby Letterman.
Finally, Lee Thompson presented the Senior Awards. This award recognizes those swimmers that graduated high school in May and are moving on to the next stage in their lives. He gave glowing tributes to Danielle McPherson and Brett Ulsamer.
Danielle McPherson and Brett Ulsamer are recognized for the achievements and effort during their years within the Summer Swim Team.
With that, each swimmer was called up to the awards table to receive their season ending gifts and other "stuff". The big gift this year was an orange Jersey Shore Swim Team towel with their individual name in a corner.
