Jersey Shore’s Damon Cole stretches it out in the 200 meter freestyle.
Jersey Shore left Bloomsburg last year shell shocked, losing the dual meet 9-1. This past Saturday, however, Jersey Shore fell a few points short of swimming off with a victory and it was Bloomsburg that escaped with a 5-5 tie.
Patty Kennelley, in her sixth season as Shore’s head coach, has her biggest team yet and laden with talent. “With more swimmers this year, I feel our team as a whole will be more competitive. The team’s competitiveness showed throughout the meet. In the boys 12-and-under opening medley relay, Zac Schwoyer and Kegan Wagner fought to stay within striking distance of Bloomsburg. By the time Jersey Shore’s number three swimmer Luke Engel jumped in, Bloomsburg Area YMCA (BAY) swimmers had built a seemingly insurmountable 11 second lead. Engel, using BAY’s Noah Seidenberg as a focal point, gave chase and erased the deficit in the butterfly leg and handed off a 4 second lead to Jonathan Creveling. Now it was time for BAY to give chase but Creveling held the lead and touched the wall for win.

The opening relay was just a start for Shore’s 12-and-under boys as they went on to capture seven of nine events, winning 50-27. Engel went onto win the 50 meter butterfly while teammates John Duda won the 50 meter backstroke and freestyle and Jacob Butzler captured the 200 meter freestyle and individual medley.
The 15-and-over girls were equally as dominate, winning all their events except the 100 meter breaststroke. It was the freestyle events, however, that belonged to Jersey Shore. Maddi Thompson and Jessica Schwoyer took first and third in the 200 meter freestyle while Jamie Mason took the top spot in the 50 meter freestyle. Shore’s Thompson, Mason, and Lindsay Dudek dominated the 100 meter freestyle by taking the top three spots respectively. Dudek went on to win the 100 meter butterfly and teammate BethAnn Schwoyer finished first in the 200 meter individual medley and 100 meter backstroke.
It was a bit tougher for the 8-and-under girls. It was back and forth throughout the afternoon and BAY had a 30-25 lead going into the final individual event, the 25 meter breaststroke. Shore finished strong as Isabelle Griswold, Allison Moore, Haley Shadle, and Stephanie Steinbacher finished 1-2-3-4 respectively. That strong showing pushed Shore on top, 33-31, heading into the final relay.
Bloomsburg still had a chance to win this age group in the 100 meter freestyle relay by taking the two top spots. The relay of Jordan O’Connor, Natalie Charnego, Griswold, and Taylor Fleming dashed those hopes by winning the event by over two seconds. Teammates Moore, Haley Shadle, Meaghan Keegan, and Maegan Sorgen added an insurance point by taking third.
Jersey Shore next meet is against Lock Haven on January 8 at Lock Haven University’s Zimmerli Pool at 1:00 PM.
