Jersey Shore Swimmers Finish Season With Strong Showing At YMCA States

Jersey Shore head coach, Patty Kennelley, announced her upcoming retirement from the sport to her swimmers several weeks ago. This past weekend at YMCA States was bittersweet as it was her last walk on a pool deck as a coach. She will walk into retirement with good memories over the many seasons and was able to exit the sport with a state champion swimmer under her belt.

The stage was set when Emma Butzler swam the 10-and-under girls 50 yard butterfly at YMCA Western Districts on March 13th and finished second to Allison Ahl of Corry YMCA by 34/100s of a second. Her finish was fast enough to qualify her for States but it also seeded her second to Ahl in the upcoming event.

The final heat and top seeds of the 50 fly at States went off fast as all swimmers had clean starts. Butzler moved down the lane, slightly ahead of Ahl but trailing behind Phoenixville YMCA’s Erin Merke. Coming out of the turn, Butzler pulled even with Merke and neither swimmer could create any separation as they swam the final length. It was a splash of water as the three top seeds lunged toward the wall. Spectators and officials could not visually see who touched the wall first and all eyes turned to the timing board at Penn State’s McCoy Natatorium to see the results. The timer had Butzler on top at 30.68 seconds, 2/100s of a second ahead of Merke and 22/100s in front of Ahl. It was the closest race over the two day, 72 event swim meet.

In addition to her butterfly win, Butzler placed fifth in the 100 yard freestyle. She finished her day by joining teammates Sam Keegan, Riley Markley, and Ashlyn Wool for a sixteenth place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Although Keegan dropped times in her individual races, she just finished out of the point race with a 13th and 16th in her 50 yard breaststroke and 100 yard individual medley.

Shore swimmer Maddi Thompson was also on the medal podium with a 5th and 10th place finish in the girls 15-and-over 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. She also swam with teammates BethAnn Schwoyer, Gabby Rossman, and Lindsay Dudek to place 14th in the 400 yard medley relay. Schwoyer captured 25th in the 100 yard backstroke and 14th in the 500 yard freestyle.

Brothers Cody and Chet Schwoyer along with Tyler Sheets and Evan Moore finished 21st in the 14-and-under boys 200 yard medley relay and 22nd in the 200 freestyle relay. Each member of those relays swam one individual event as Chet was 32nd in the 200 yard freestyle, Cody was 31st in the 100 yard backstroke, Moore was 29th in the 100 yard butterfly, and Tyler Sheets was 26th in the 50 yard freestyle. On the girls side, Hannah Runtas finished 36th in the 50 yard freestyle.

Jacob Butzler was Shore’s sole representative in the 12-and-under category and placed 22nd in the 200 yard freestyle.

Lock Haven’s YMCA has two state qualifiers, Nolan Dale in the boys 14-and-under boys finished 33rd in the 50 yard freestyle while his brother, Ethan finished 24th in the boys 12-and-under 50 yard breaststroke.

Carrying the Torch

Nolan and Ethan Dale along with teammate Michelle Haftl are traveling to Indiania University of PA March 12th-13th for YMCA Districts.  They will continue the long held tradition of sending Lock Haven swimmers onto the next level of the YMCA swimming season.  Below is a group of swimmers that made the journey 20 years ago.

Swimmers who were headed to the Western YMCA Districts at Clarion University in 1991 were, in water, from left, Scott Hayes, Melissa Sox, Erin Pete, Angela Spangler, Tommy Shortledge, Matt Stern; and, on edge of the pool, from left, are Anna Zoltoski, Benji Shortledge, Mandi Houser, Rachael Packer, Jenny Mellinger, Molly Davey, Patrick Nevins and Nina Hess. Not pictured were Steve Dunkle, Mark Temons, Brian Cruse and Ashley Buheit.  Photo was in the January 25, 2011 edition of the Lock Haven Express

Busy Weekend For Jersey Shore Swimmers

It is a busy weekend for Jersey Shore Swimmers.  It all started last night when the Jersey Shore High School boys competed in the PIAA District IV Championship Swim Meet.  The girls will swim today.  Psych sheets can be viewed here.

Also on Saturday, several Jersey Shore swimmers will be swimming under USA's Haven Area Aquatic Club banner and participate in the Nittany Lion Aquatics Swim Meet.  Psych sheets can be found here.  Results can be found here.

Finally, many swimmers will head over to the Lock Haven University pool to compete in the Zoltoski Pentathlon.

Of course, for those who are not on a swim, they can head up to the Jersey Shore High School pool and swim around during the Jersey Shore Community Swim.  For pictures go here, here, and here.

An Army of Volunteers

The Jersey Shore YMCA Swim Team was host to the 2011 Central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim League Championship Meet this past Sunday at the Williamsport High School. It was a successful meet as several Jersey Shore swimmers broke meet records and gained times to move them onto YMCA Western Districts.

On a larger note, spectators were entertained with some exciting races and good food throughout the day. In addition, several hundred swimmers were able to compete and appear on the starting blocks as if synchronized.

The event could not have happened without the Jersey Shore parents stepping up to plate. Behind most Shore swimmers (sadly, not all felt the need to help with the event) was a parent or two who worked tirelessly throughout the day to make sure the meet went off without a hitch.  The Jersey Shore Swim blog would like to recognize those dedicated volunteers.

Concession Stand
The meet didn’t start until after 9:00 AM but parent volunteers started the day before 7:00 AM. This group was in charge of bringing food and drink from vehicles into the concessions area. They were also required to help set up the tables, fill the drink coolers, and put the products out on tables. This group consisted of:

• Cathy and Fletcher Farr
• Nichole Shadle
• Glenn Griswold
• Andrew Baker
• Kim Schwoyer
• Mike Fleming
• Sue & Mike Thompson

Manning the concession stand during the morning swim was carried out by a whole new set of volunteers. You could tell this group as they darted in and out of the swim meet to watch their kid(s) swim and then turn around and sell breakfast sandwiches (they were pretty darn good) or pierogies. This crew consisted of:

Morning
• Cathy and Fletcher Farr
• Connie Hale
• Marci Griswold
• Donna Sorgen
• Wendi O’Conner
• Andrew Baker
• Kelly Butzler
• Julie Steinbacher (store runner, for items running short)

Afternoon
• Cathy and Fletcher Farr
• Larisa Yakut
• Shirl & Tom Bechtol
• Kelly Butzler
• Sherman Shadle
• Renna’ Engle
• Julie Panczyszyn and Nicole Shadle (until they had to go time, double duty)
• Chris Naugle (when she wasn't relief timer)

Swimmer Crowd Control
Another set of parents had to start organizing the Jersey Shore swimmers as they started to trickle into the lobby area starting at 7:30 AM. Each swimmer was swimming in four events so this group had to help get swimmers hands written on, police the team area and help make sure the younger swimmers get to the seeding area at the right time. This would require maintaining a presence in the gym during the morning session.

• Tammy Lehman
• Lorrie Creveling
• Julie Steinbacher
• Ellen Keegan

Timers and Officials
Although the parent timers and officials didn’t have to dart in and out of the pool area to watch their kid(s) swim, their job required a lot of attention. (Note – there were parent volunteers from other swim teams also assisting in this endeavor but this blog is only recognizing Jersey Shore parents).

Morning Officials
• David Keegan
• Chet Schwoyer
• Kim Schwoyer (Table)
• Jodi Duda (Table)
• Michelle White (Table)

Afternoon Officials
• Chet Schwoyer
• Dan Zeigler
• Dave Keegan
• Jodi Duda (Table)
• Michelle White (Table)

Morning Timers
• Jody Jolin
• Nichole Shadle
• Larisa Yakut
• Mike Fleming
• Julie Panczyszyn
• Kim Poretta

Afternoon Timers
• Nichole Shadle
• Julie Steinbacher
• Julie Wagner
• Julie Panczyszyn
• Chris Naugle- Relief Timer

Program Table
Most parents want to be able to see what events their kids swim but also where they are seeded in the event, hence the need for a program. These were sold at the entrance by the following volunteers:

• Todd & Shelley Moore
• Kelli Markley
• Dawn & Mike Fleming
• Tabi Whitman
• Lynn & John Charnego

Clean-up
Then there was the aftermath. Eventually, the meet ended and everything had to be cleaned up. Since the facility is rented it had to be left clean. Most teams leave as soon as they can, so a nice size crew had to tidy-up, haul out the leftovers, pick up litter, etc…

Afternoon Tear-down (CONCESSIONS)
This group had to help tear down the tables, empty the drink coolers, put the products away, clean up dishes and carry things to the car, etc…
• Cathy & Fletcher Farr
• Schwoyer’s
• Bechtol’s
• Shadle’s

Afternoon Tear-down (LOBBY/STANDS/GYM/POOL DECK)
• Moore’s
• Keegan’s
• Butzler’s
• Schwoyer’s
• Duncan Frazier (Williamsport Swimmer)

Shore YMCA Swimmers Break Records At Meet

Jersey Shore's 8-and-under girls were recognized before the start of the Central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim League championship meet last Sunday at the Williamsport High School pool for their undefeated regular season dual meet record.

Shortly afterward, they showed the crowd why they dominated the season.  The girls were seeded third in the opening medley relay behind two Bloomsburg Barracuda teams. Shore's relay squad - which featured Jordon O'Connor, Isabelle Griswold, Natalie Charnego and Taylor Fleming - had the lead initially but fell to second during the butterfly leg. Fleming stole the lead from Bloomsburg on the last lap, allowing the Bullfrogs to finish the race with a victory in a time that broke the meet record.

Jersey Shore's head coach Patty Kennelley used those four hard in the individual events that followed with good results. Griswold finished second in the 25-yard backstroke to East Lycoming's Cassandra Gee by 12/100s of a second, while teammate Fleming had an equally close race in the 50 freestyle, finishing 14/100s of a second behind Bloomsburg's Emily Keyser.

Sunbury YMCA Tops Jersey Shore

When you swim against the Sunbury YMCA Dolphins (SUNY), you better bring your ‘A’ game. They are a dominating team in the water and overwhelm the competition with numbers and speed. The past two years, the Dolphins blanked Jersey Shore 10-0 as the black and orange were unable to mount significant competition. This past Saturday, however; Shore was able to pick up three age group wins and come within points of a fourth at Susquehanna University’s James W. Garrett Sports Complex Swimming Pool.

Jersey Shore has placed an emphasis on developing younger swimmers to grow the program and it appears that the plan is making progress. The three age groups that defeated SUNY were the 8-and-under girls and boys plus the 10-and-under girls.

The 8-and-under-boys won 35-14 while the girls cruised to a 52-18 victory. The girls started off with an uncontested win in the opening 100 medley relay. Even when there was competition, they were able to win the majority of the individual events. Taylor Fleming, Meaghan Keegan, and Maegan Sorgen went 1-2-3 in the 100 yard IM while teammates Allison Moore and Jordon O’Connor took the two top spots in the 25 yard backstroke.

Jersey Shore’s Cassie Kitchen waits her turn for flip turn drills during warm-ups.

When SUNY 8-and-under girls were able to win an event, Shore was right behind them taking the number 2 and 3 slots. SUNY’s Molly Paulsen won the 25 yard butterfly with Shore’s Keegan and Natalie Charnego picking up 4 points with a second and third place finish. Paulsen won the very next event, the 50 yard freestyle, but Shore again captured the next two spots with Isabelle Griswold and Sorgen. "We have a great group of 8-and-under girls on the team this season,” said head Jersey Shore head coach Patty Kennelley. “You can tell they enjoy coming to practice, they all get along and they work hard at practice. With the depth I have with these girls, and as their strokes get stronger, I am able to put them in events they would not normally pick for themselves, like the 100 IM and 50 Free. But once they swim these events, they want to swim them all the time."

The 10-and-under girls had a tougher time. SUNY consistently placed two swimmers in the top three spots in almost every individual race. The Dolphin’s Elizabeth Bason and Anna Benner took first and second in the 50 yard freestyle with Hannah Stemler finishing second. Shore’s Sam Keegan won the 50 yard breaststroke but SUNY picked up 4 points as Kylie Mallams and Talle Troupe finished second and third. Although SUNY took the final relay, it was not enough to overcome the points accumulated by Shore’s capture of four individual events to SUNY’s two.

The 12-and-under girls lost their age group by five points, 44-39 as SUNY was able to capture the majority of individual events. The Shore girls were able to finish strong by going 1-2 in the final 200 freestyle relay.

The dual meet season for Jersey Shore is over with the Central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim League slated for February 20 at the Williamsport High School pool.

Jersey Shore eases past East Lyco, 8-2

The 50-meter freestyle event is often called the glamour event of swimming because it is fast with close finishes.  An explosive dive off the block starts the race followed by powerful kicks as swimmers reach top speed in a matter of seconds. No need to conserve energy in this race as it is over shortly after it starts. This was exemplified this past Saturday at the Jersey Shore High School pool where the 50 freestyle events provided some exciting races between the Jersey Shore Bullfrogs and East Lycoming Electric Eels.

2011 YMCA Team Pictures

Team pictures are scheduled for next Monday, January 31st beginning at 5:30 PM. With the size of the team it will definitely take a while to take all the pictures, so practice will be determined by what time

pictures are finished.

ALL kids should be included in the team picture, whether or not you wish to have individual pictures taken of your child(ren).
