Jersey Shore's 2nd Annual Kids Triathlon A Success or 'What's Next - Locusts'?

In 2011, local triathletes faced scorching hot weather at the start of the race.  Certain parts of the route were shortened and water cooling stations were set-up throughout the course to keep everyone safe.  Last year's triathlon posting can be read here.  This year, July 27, athletes faced the elements once again as monsoon like weather moved in right before race time.  Parts of the running route were under water as a nearby stream jumped its bank.

For the 7-9 year olds, they swam 25 yards, biked .71 miles, and ran .44 miles.  The distance increased for the next age group with the 10-12 year olds swimming 50 yards, biking .71 yards, and running .54 yards.  The last group to start, the 13-14 year olds, swam 100 yards, biked 1.77 yards, and ran .78 miles.  A map of the course can be seen below.

This event could not have taken place without several sponsors.  Jersey Shore State Bank was our financial sponsor and Lock Haven's Bike Gallery and Bonner Sports and RV provided plenty of door prizes for the kids.

Although unofficial, the age group results of the triathlon can be here.

Below are a few pictures of the event.  Additional pictures can be viewed here.

Are The San Francisco 49ers Ready To Field A Swim Team?

All-Pro wide receiver, Randy Moss of the San Francisco 49ers, has been using swimming as a way to stay at the top of his game. It has proven to become very popular with his teammates as there are times when 30 of his fellow players are in the water working on aerobic activities.  The story can be read here.  Do you think the Jersey Shore football team could benefit from this cross-training workout?  Nah!

Jersey Shore's Younger Age Groups (Girls) Dominate Fly Events at Championships

During the 2012 Bald Eagle Swim League Championship meet held at the Jersey Shore Borough Pool this past July, Shore's younger girls seem to have had a stranglehold on the butterfly events.

Shore's 8-and-under girls of Meaghan Keegan and Sarah Misquitta captured 1st and 3rd respectively in the 25 yard butterfly while the next age group up (the 10-and-unders), Taylor Fleming took third.  It was the 12-and-unders that dominated the 50 butterfly as Emma Butzler, Gabbie Moore, Kendra White, and Sam Keegan took 1, 2, 3, and 5th respectively.

Their race can be viewed below as Sam Keegan is in lane 1 (top of screen) followed by lanes 2, 3, and 4 of Kendra White, Gabbie Moore, and Emma Butzler respectively.

Area Swimmers Compete In Inaugural Lumberjack Triathlon

Before many Williamsport residents were even out of bed on August 12, many triathletes were in the water ready for the start of the Lumberjack Triathlon.  It was a race that consisted of a 800 yard swim, 13.7 mile bike ride, and a 3.1 mile run.  A map of the course can be viewed below,

Many triathlons have the swimming leg in swimming pools where mass starts are avoided.  The Lumberjack Triathlon took advantage of the Williamsport's natural features with the swim in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
