Hidden Gem

How many folks outside of Renovo know that there is an indoor pool within the town limits? How long has this pool been existence? Looking back at historical records, it appears that it has been there for over 67 years.
This is part of a 1944 document celebrating the YMCA in Renovo and can be found at http://www.renovoheritage.org/documents/44YEARS.PDF  Click on photo to enlarge
Great quote in the document in which Mr. William V. Amig, President of the Renovo Y. M.C. A. states, "Every child in this community should be able to swim."

Not much has changed at this pool.  Here are two pictures below taken on February 4, 2011. It looks like it hasn’t changed much when compared to the historical document above.  Probably the only thing that has changed is the ownership.  There is no longer a YMCA in Renovo but the community feels that recreation is important to families and youth.  The pool is now part of the Western Clinton County Recreation Authority

Here is the irony. Renovo has been a town that has been hit hard over the past several decades with the demise of the railroad industry. But the community leaders have felt that providing recreational opportunities for families and youth is important. Now contrast that philosophy to Montoursville and Mill Hall, neither of which has suffered economically like Renovo. Follow the pool closing in Montoursville here, here, and here or the pool mess in Mill Hall here, here, and here.

Look at the picture below very closely. In the background you’ll notice frac tanks which are being filled with water for hydro fracturing for the Marcellus Gas Industry. In the foreground is the former Montoursville outdoor pool slowly being filled in. Priorities Set!

At one time, the Renovo area had a very strong swim team. Below is a newspaper clipping showing Jersey Shore losing to Renovo in a dual meet in the summer of 1981. The indoor pool was clearly an advantage as it allowed Renovo swimmers to swim year round (The Jersey Shore High School pool was not built yet and JS are swimmers only had the outdoor pool during the summer months).

Jersey Shore Community Swim On A Roll

Although it was a bit warmer this past Sunday (temperatures in the mid-40s), swimming was still a recreational pursuit for many Jersey Shore families. The Community Swim will again open this upcoming Sunday from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.
Parents do not have to swim as several lifeguards are on duty to watch the swimmers.  Note the parents in the stands.  Admission is free if you are only watching your child swim.

Sunbury YMCA Tops Jersey Shore

When you swim against the Sunbury YMCA Dolphins (SUNY), you better bring your ‘A’ game. They are a dominating team in the water and overwhelm the competition with numbers and speed. The past two years, the Dolphins blanked Jersey Shore 10-0 as the black and orange were unable to mount significant competition. This past Saturday, however; Shore was able to pick up three age group wins and come within points of a fourth at Susquehanna University’s James W. Garrett Sports Complex Swimming Pool.

Jersey Shore has placed an emphasis on developing younger swimmers to grow the program and it appears that the plan is making progress. The three age groups that defeated SUNY were the 8-and-under girls and boys plus the 10-and-under girls.

The 8-and-under-boys won 35-14 while the girls cruised to a 52-18 victory. The girls started off with an uncontested win in the opening 100 medley relay. Even when there was competition, they were able to win the majority of the individual events. Taylor Fleming, Meaghan Keegan, and Maegan Sorgen went 1-2-3 in the 100 yard IM while teammates Allison Moore and Jordon O’Connor took the two top spots in the 25 yard backstroke.

Jersey Shore’s Cassie Kitchen waits her turn for flip turn drills during warm-ups.

When SUNY 8-and-under girls were able to win an event, Shore was right behind them taking the number 2 and 3 slots. SUNY’s Molly Paulsen won the 25 yard butterfly with Shore’s Keegan and Natalie Charnego picking up 4 points with a second and third place finish. Paulsen won the very next event, the 50 yard freestyle, but Shore again captured the next two spots with Isabelle Griswold and Sorgen. "We have a great group of 8-and-under girls on the team this season,” said head Jersey Shore head coach Patty Kennelley. “You can tell they enjoy coming to practice, they all get along and they work hard at practice. With the depth I have with these girls, and as their strokes get stronger, I am able to put them in events they would not normally pick for themselves, like the 100 IM and 50 Free. But once they swim these events, they want to swim them all the time."

The 10-and-under girls had a tougher time. SUNY consistently placed two swimmers in the top three spots in almost every individual race. The Dolphin’s Elizabeth Bason and Anna Benner took first and second in the 50 yard freestyle with Hannah Stemler finishing second. Shore’s Sam Keegan won the 50 yard breaststroke but SUNY picked up 4 points as Kylie Mallams and Talle Troupe finished second and third. Although SUNY took the final relay, it was not enough to overcome the points accumulated by Shore’s capture of four individual events to SUNY’s two.

The 12-and-under girls lost their age group by five points, 44-39 as SUNY was able to capture the majority of individual events. The Shore girls were able to finish strong by going 1-2 in the final 200 freestyle relay.

The dual meet season for Jersey Shore is over with the Central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim League slated for February 20 at the Williamsport High School pool.

Jersey Shore eases past East Lyco, 8-2

The 50-meter freestyle event is often called the glamour event of swimming because it is fast with close finishes.  An explosive dive off the block starts the race followed by powerful kicks as swimmers reach top speed in a matter of seconds. No need to conserve energy in this race as it is over shortly after it starts. This was exemplified this past Saturday at the Jersey Shore High School pool where the 50 freestyle events provided some exciting races between the Jersey Shore Bullfrogs and East Lycoming Electric Eels.

Zoltoski Swimming Pentathlon

Click on picture to enlarge entry form
It’s pretty safe to say that fundraising is an integral part of youth sports. It helps defray costs for equipment facilities, maintenance, end of season gifts, etc. The Lock Haven swim parents were faced with the same issue several decades ago and came up with a novel approach to raise funds; a swimming pentathlon. What at one time was a simple fundraiser has turned into a premier swimming event in central Pennsylvania.

The pentathlon was the brain child of John and Mary Ann Zoltolski along with several other swim parents who in 1980 created a race in which each athlete swims in four individual events: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. The times for each event are added together and the seeding for the last race, the individual medley (combination of all 4 stokes in one event) is based on those times. After all five events, the swimmer with the lowest accumulation of times is the winner.

John and Mary Ann had a strong interest in swimming as their three kids started swimming at a young age and continued on through high school. “John and Mary Ann loved swimming because they felt that it taught sportsmanship,” said Loretta Jones, longtime friend and ex-president of the Lock Haven YMCA Swim Team Parents Association. “In addition, the Zoltoskis’ believed that not only was it a team sport but a sport that allowed an individual to excel”.

John passed away in the 1990’s and the parents named it the John Zoltoski Pentathlon. Mary Ann carried the torch until her death in 2008. At that time, the YMCA Swim Team Parents Association changed the name to better reflect the effort of both supporters, the Zoltoski Memorial Pentathlon.

“Kids return year after year because they tell me that it’s fun”, said Jones. “Mary Ann always had a story about swimming. My favorites were the ones that involved kids a little rough around the edges and the discipline of the sport that eventually straightened them out”.

Now in its thirtieth year, it attracts swimmers from all over central Pennsylvania and the Zoltolski’s swimming passion lives on.

Central Mountain High School Swim Update

Carole Matheney, head swim coach for Central Mountain Schools, provided the Jersey Shore Swim blog with an update of some swim meets.

Central Mountain has ups and downs in 2 weeks of meets. Last Monday January 17th - CM travelled to Lewistown. We swam Lewistown and Indian Valley High Schools. The boys and the girls triumphed over both schools The CM girls won by 2 points against Lewistown. They have some very fast girls who swim for the Bellefonte YMCA team. The Lewstown coaches and the Indian Valley coaches do a very nice job. They also train at a YMCA. The Juniata Valley YMCA in Buhrnam, PA. A very nice facility, handicapped accessible, 6 lanes, electronic timing - a class act all the way. Even though they have to wait around for rec. swims to finish . . . . 6 lanes is AWESOME!

The next week, Thursday, January 27th, CM travelled to Jersey Shore - where they lost but were not embarrassed. CM was in every race. CM might have surprised Jersey Shore in some areas. It was nice to swim a local meet and great to see everyone!

Then CM went to State College. The Little Lions ate the Wildcats for their evening meal! We had to wait until the 100 breastroke to come in third place, on the heels of Sr. - Emily Holladay, who is having a great year in her farewell season ! Central Mountain's next action is against St. Marys - we go to them this time. - That meet is February 8th.

Families Flock To Jersey Shore Community Swim

Over 125 people were in the pool throughtout the 2 hour Community Swim today.  Judging by the laughter and smiles from the kids, it looked like it was a success.  The Community Swim will run every Sunday until April 17.  A big thanks to Dorothy Chappell, Director of Career and Technical Education and Avis Elementary Principal for her effort in making this a reality.

When Is Swimming Like A tennis Match?

Watching the future of the Mill Hall pool is like watching a tennis match.  One day the future of the pool looks bright, then days later it looks like it is history.  A week later, things look better as there is some positive movement only to have the future look like it is in the trash heap as everything falls apart again.  Back and forth, back and forth.  Read the January 26 edition of the Lock Haven Express as it looks like things are back in the positive territory.  Will it stay positive?  For more, read here.

1985-86 Jersey Shore YMCA Team Picture

It is time for the 2010-11 Jersey Shore YMCA winter swim team to get together for their team picture.  The Jersey Shore swim blog thought it would be interesting to look at the team from 25 years ago.  Can anyone provide the names of the swimmers in the picture?

2011 YMCA Team Pictures

Team pictures are scheduled for next Monday, January 31st beginning at 5:30 PM. With the size of the team it will definitely take a while to take all the pictures, so practice will be determined by what time

pictures are finished.

ALL kids should be included in the team picture, whether or not you wish to have individual pictures taken of your child(ren).

Make sure the kids wear their team suits and have whatever "props" they want in their individual picture - towel, cap, goggles, frog, etc.

Mill Hall Pool: "The pool is too big of an asset to the community and the surrounding communities."

One of the Clinton County commissioners sees the value of providing recreational opportunities for Lock Haven area families and youth.  Tom Bossert stated in the January 21 edition of the Lock Haven Express the following: "The pool is too big of an asset to the community and the surrounding communities," he said. "We want to see this succeed."  He also stated "The county is very much interested in the success of this project," he said. "We want this to work... We want to see this happen big-time."
