Families Flock To Jersey Shore Community Swim
Over 125 people were in the pool throughtout the 2 hour Community Swim today. Judging by the laughter and smiles from the kids, it looked like it was a success. The Community Swim will run every Sunday until April 17. A big thanks to Dorothy Chappell, Director of Career and Technical Education and Avis Elementary Principal for her effort in making this a reality.

When Is Swimming Like A tennis Match?
Watching the future of the Mill Hall pool is like watching a tennis match. One day the future of the pool looks bright, then days later it looks like it is history. A week later, things look better as there is some positive movement only to have the future look like it is in the trash heap as everything falls apart again. Back and forth, back and forth. Read the January 26 edition of the Lock Haven Express as it looks like things are back in the positive territory. Will it stay positive? For more, read here.

Jersey Shore YMCA/Bellefonte Meet Synopsis
Two YMCA teams call Lock Haven University's Zimmerli Pool home: The Bellefonte Stingrays and the Lock Haven Loggerheads.
Jersey Shore's schedule had the team traveling there twice in January for dual meets against both. Shore dispatched Lock Haven, 10-0, earlier this month, but had a tougher opponent in Bellefonte escaping with a 5-all tie last Saturday.

1985-86 Jersey Shore YMCA Team Picture
It is time for the 2010-11 Jersey Shore YMCA winter swim team to get together for their team picture. The Jersey Shore swim blog thought it would be interesting to look at the team from 25 years ago. Can anyone provide the names of the swimmers in the picture?

2011 YMCA Team Pictures
Team pictures are scheduled for next Monday, January 31st beginning at 5:30 PM. With the size of the team it will definitely take a while to take all the pictures, so practice will be determined by what time
pictures are finished.
ALL kids should be included in the team picture, whether or not you wish to have individual pictures taken of your child(ren).
Make sure the kids wear their team suits and have whatever "props" they want in their individual picture - towel, cap, goggles, frog, etc.

Jersey Shore vs Bloomsburg, High School Swimming
Boys: Jersey Shore – 58 Bloomsburg – 107
Girls: Jersey Shore – 111 Bloomsburg – 46
Jersey Shore Head Coach, Lee Thompson, has provided comments from the meet and are below:
Tonight, was Senior Night – a night where the Jersey Shore coaches, swimmers, parents and fans can show their appreciation for the individuals whom will be graduating this year. Jersey Shore will be graduating Joseph Buttorff, Darcie Jones, Luke Wolmer, Gabby Rossman, Steven Smeltzer and Madalyn Thompson. Three of our seniors are first year swimmers (Joseph, Luke and Steven) are a major help to the boys. The seniors walked through the cheers and high fives of their teammates to accept a rose from their parents and pose for a picture. A ten-minute special dedicated strictly to our seniors is not near enough the recognition that they deserve. The seniors and the rest of the team led Jersey Shore to another 1 - 1 against Bloomsburg.

It is always neat to see the perspective of other newspapers on local teams. Athens head coach Mark Keister had a good quote for the Jersey Shore team. "Jersey Shore is my high school alma matter. They have a very strong tradition of fast girls. They own several District IV records and have a noticeable presence at the state meet. They may have had some girls swimming off events, but most of the events were very fast."

Jersey Shore Tops Lock Haven YMCA Swimmers
First year Lock Haven Loggerhead YMCA head coach Joel Blesh’s expectations are completely different than his counterpart across the county line in Jersey Shore. He is slowly building the program meet by meet and adding swimmers as he goes, working on the fundamentals. “We had stacks of disqualification papers in our last meet against Bloomsburg and Bellefonte but we have been really working on technique the past few weeks,” said Blesh. The effort showed as very few of his swimmers were disqualified in Sunday’s meet against Jersey Shore.

Around and Around and Around and Around and Around and.....
In the December 21 edition of the Lock Haven Express, there was an editorial that read "How unfortunate that there is no outdoor ice-skating rink in Greater Lock Haven for area children - and adults - to enjoy. " **
Now simply replace 'ice-skating rink' with pool. It looks more and more likely that the Lock Haven area will not have an outdoor pool for future generations of youth and families as planning comes to a halt. You can read it here in the January 12 Lock Haven Express.
The ice-skating editorial ends with the following statement, "Seems it's just not a priority in Clinton County today. How unfortunate." The same goes for the outdoor pool, how unfortunate!
**Note - It appears that an outdoor ice-skating rink in the Greater Lock Haven for area children - and adults - to enjoy was actually a good idea. Check out the January 6 Lock Haven Express edition here, where "The only ice skating pond in the area was a collaborative effort by several township organizations such as the fire company, the landfill, the Clinton County Correctional Facility and more." Pictures of the first skaters can be viewed here in the January 11 Lock Haven Express.
The power of people working together for an idea (not against) can accomplish great things.

The Jersey Shore Bulldogs vs. The Williamsport Millionaires tends to be the areas biggest rivalries in almost every sport and swimming is no exception. Walking in the pool one would see nervous swimmers, parents and coaches pacing both the stands and the pool deck. But once the meet begins you can see the teams creating a much more friendly atmosphere. Jersey Shore and Williamsport has the upmost respect for each others swimmers, parents and coaches alike; training together during the pre-season and pushing each other during peak season. The meet turned out to be a spectacular showing for both Jersey Shore and Williamsport adding another win to Jersey Shore Girls column and lifting Williamsport’s boys up to yet another dominating victory.

Don't Be A Dead Person Walking - Get Up And Swim!
Here was an article in the January 7, 2011 edition of the Lock Haven Express where swimming is an important component in a long healthy lifestyle.
By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press
At 45, DeEtte Sauer was a dead woman walking.
She was morbidly obese, her heart disease so serious a doctor warned her to expect "an event at any time." Eaten up by her marketing career, struggling to raise three kids, she smoked, drank and never, ever exercised.
Sauer remembers a vacation when—at 5-foot-5 and 230 pounds—she couldn't make it onto a small boat for a day out with her family. "That's when it hit me. I was an elected cripple. I had done it to myself."
She got busy, slowly shedding the weight through sensible eating and exercise. She began to walk around her Houston neighborhood, then she discovered the pool. Now 69, the woman who once had a supermom complex is a competitive, medal-winning senior swimmer.

Puzzling Attitude
The Jersey Shore Swim blog is scratching it's head over the perception of swimming within the Jersey Shore community. The one comment that is heard time after time is that it is for girls or "chicks".
Lewisburg junior linebacker Nick Cozza was part of the Green Dragons football team that fell short from capturing a state title this year. During the winter season, he cross trains by competing for his high school swim team.
Look at Josh Cillo, a former running back for Montoursville. He was a first team Heartland-I football all-star and was second in the area with 1,524 yards and 21 touchdowns in 1998. He ran for 179 yards in his final game against Mount Carmel, the most any player ran for against the District 4 Class AA champions. Cillo topped 100 yards eight times and surpassed 1,000 yards for two seasons while helping Montoursville reach the district final. Cillo gained 222 yards against Jersey Shore in his final season and also scored twice that game. Yet during the winter season, he was a swimmer. Check out the article here.
Maybe cross training, such as swimming, for other area football players would help them on the gridiron.
Did these guys really think swimming was for chicks?

The Uncertain Future of Swimming in Central Pennsylvania
