Central Mountain Wildcat Boys Fall to St. Mary’s By Two

by Dana Suter

Going into Saturday’s swim meet with St. Mary’s, CMHS head swim coach Carol Matheney was hoping to better the score against the Flying Dutch after the Wildcats fell short, by only six points, the weekend before at the Arctic Classic.

However, as fate would have it for the Wildcats, their strong efforts against a competitive St. Mary’s squad was not enough to carry them over the hump as they fell 81-79 in PIAA high school swimming.

The Wildcats got down to business right from the start with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay, the team of Phil Rodo, Jordan Suter, Josh Cram and Tyler Sheets coming in at 1:54:03. Suter, struggling with a shoulder injury, narrowly missed second, placed third in the 200-yard freestyle followed by Mark Myers who placed fourth. Cram and Kibler placed second and fourth respectively in their 200-yard individual medley while teammate Ben Jones gave the momentum the Wildcats needed by cruising to the wall to win in the 50-yard freestyle.
Senior Bethany Barrett powers through the
water in her 100-yard backstroke

The Flying Dutch were up by four leading into the 100-yard butterfly where teammates Rodo and Sheets brought the outside smoke to win first and second in that order, and adding ten much needed points to the scoreboard and giving the Wildcats a one point lead. The score became tied with Cram’s second place finish in his 100-yard freestyle followed by Mark Myers’ third.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Suter was able to add support to the scoreboard, placing third in the event while sophomore Nolan Dale followed in fourth.  With the score slightly in favor of the Flying Dutch, the Wildcats knew they needed the relay teams to place in the top three in order to remain close. The 200- yard relay team of Sheets, Cram, Suter, and Rodo placed second giving the Wildcats four points, while the second relay team of Ethan Dale, Jewayne Marshall, Mark Myers and Nolan Dale placed fourth.

The 100-yard backstroke saw Central Mountain garner a number of points with Rodo touching the wall in second, followed by Kibler third and Marshall fourth. The Wildcats snagged the most points in the 100-yard breast stroke when Jones out-touched the Flying Dutch for a first place finish with a 1:13:46, Sheets a very close second at 1:14:46, followed by E. Dale in third.

The Wildcats were up by two points, in a back-and-forth tight contest, going into the 400-yard free relay. The strong St. Mary’s team prevailed though. “I was very pleased with all of my guys’ performances today,” said Coach Matheney, whose squad improved to 3-2-1. “I expected it to be tight. They had a good meet. They should be very pleased with themselves.”

“On the girls’ side, depth continues to be an issue,” said Matheney. “We’ve gotten stronger; we’re just missing the numbers.”

Senior Bethany Barrett had a strong day, tallying the most points for the lady Wildcats, placing second in her 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke while teammate Hannah Worden followed with two, third place finishes in her 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breast stroke. The 200-yard relay team of Kyra Greenaway, Hannah Williams, Hannah Worden and Danielle Bryan contributed to the scoreboard by placing third. Williams and Greenaway continued with the momentum by placing fourth and fifth respectively in the 100-yard freestyle.  The final score for the girls was the St. Mary’s 129 – Central Mountain 23.

“This is the point in the season where all teams are training pretty hard and coming off the holiday training which is usually a lot more intense. We still have work to do, and definitely will get better as we approach districts in March,” said Matheney. “Right now, the important thing is to keep everyone healthy. Some of the swimmers are banged up. We just have to focus on those key race strategies, come out and make sure we do our best as this team has the ability to do special things.”
Central Mountain travels Thursday to take on arch rival Jersey Shore. Meet starts at 4:30pm.

Jersey Shore YMCA Tangles With Lock Haven

Both Lock Haven and Jersey Shore were working with a skeleton crew in the older age groups during this past Saturday's YMCA dual meet.  The high school kids were participating in the Arctic Swim Classic in Clearfield (Central Mountain High School boy swimmers took fifth) so much of the competition took place with the younger age groups.

Shore's 12-and-under girls won 8 out of 9 events for the day and started their winning ways with a solid swim in the opening 200 medley relay.  Hannah Stemler, Shore's leadoff swimmer, created a lead in her backstroke start that Lock Haven's other two relays could not catch.  Her teammates Sam Keegan, Ashlyn Wool, and Allison Panczyszyn capped the relay win in a time of 2:32.52.

The 50 freestyle event is a favorite amongst most swimmers, so it was no surprise the 12-and-
under girls 50 meter freestyle had 18 entries (the largest event of the whole meet).  Shore's Emma Butzler and Panczyszyn built on the momentum from the opening relay by capturing first and third respectively in the 50 free while Lock Haven's Kelsie Buckwalter captured second.

The black and orange continued the trend when Keegan and Stemler swam against another crowded field (9 other swimmers) in the 100 meter freestyle to go 1-2 respectively.  The next event, the 200 meter freestyle, Shore took first and second place as Butzler finished in a time of 2:19.96 followed by Stemler at 3:02.85.  Keegan and Butzler went on to also win the 50 meter breaststroke and butterfly respectively.  Shore's Wool won the 50 meter backstroke over teammate Isabella Hale.  Lock Haven sole win was with Kelsie Buckwalter in the 200 individual medley.

Lock Haven's 10-and-under boys were as in control of their age group as Shore's 12-and-under girls were by winning every event.  From the opening 200 medley relay of Will Straley, Leisher Gugino, Elijah Persun, and Tyler Cygan to the final 200 meter freestyle relay (same foursome), the boys put in a solid performance.  Cygan and Persun won the 100 meter freestyle and individual medley respectively while Gugino and Parker Orndorf won the 50 meter breaststroke and butterfly respectively.  Teammate Paul Shimko was Lock Haven's 10-and-under boys sole double individual winner in the 50 meter freestyle and backstroke events.

PIAA Swimming –2013 Arctic Swim Classic– CM boys place 5th!

From the desk of Dana Suter......

Hard work and dedication pay off. That was evident as the Central Mountain swim team participated in the annual Arctic Swim Classic Invitational in Clearfield. Both boys and girls finished with impressive, personal best times, with the boys placing fifth andthe girls finishing ninth. “Terrific competition,if they were giving out heat ribbons, many of our swimmer’s would have come home with one”, Coach Matheny said. “I am definitely more than pleased with the way everyone swam. We had a good day.”

On the boys’ side, the Wildcats had 7 different individuals place in the top 12 and ended the day in fifth place – just six points behind St. Mary’s and fifteen points behind Hollidaysburg. “Not bad for the smallest boys’ team participating at the classic,” said, CM volunteer coach, Steve Sheets.

Right from the start, the Central Mountain boys showcased their talent early in the 200 yard medley relay, the team of Phil Rodo, Josh Cram, Jordan Suter, and Tyler Sheets, placing 5th overall.  Touching the wall in tenth place was the relay team of Ethan Dale, Ben Jones, Brandon Kibler and Nolan Dale. The impetus persisted into the 200 yard freestyle when Jordan Suter placed fourth followed by sophomore Mark Myers, both swimmers beating their seed time as they tapped the wall and looked at the clock. Teammates, Brandon Kibler and Nolan Dale pushed each other in their 200 yard IM coming in ninth and tenth respectively.

With fifty-five competitors in the 50 yard freestyle, Central Mountain’s Phil Rodo came out on top placing fourth. Adding additional points to the scoreboard for the Wildcats in that same event was teammate, Tyler Sheets who placed ninth, followed by Nolan Dale and JeWayne Marshall.

Rodo succeeded in taking on the competition in the 100 yard butterfly, placing fourth, followed by Sheets in eleventh. Josh Cram earned a tenth place spot in his 100 yard freestyle, with Myers and Marshall trailing.

Jordan Suterwas Central Mountain’s lone swimmer in the 500 yard freestyle earning a sixth place finish for the Wildcats. The momentum continued as the relay team of Sheets, Cram, Suter and Rodo were back on the blocks in the 200 yard freestyle, charging through the waters with a time of 1:38.76, placing third, just behind Bellefonte a tough competitor, who placed second at 1:38:41. The individual events ended on a high note as senior, Ben Jones, who has been plagued with a shoulder injury, pushed through his 100 yard breaststroke event and captured a fifth place finish, and swimming  a personal best time thus far for the season. The competition concluded with the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Kibbler, E. Dale, Jones, and N. Dale taking home a fifth place finishwith a time of 3:56:19.

“On the girls’ side depth is an issue.” Losing four senior swimmers does impact the number of events the girls can swim. Not to take anything away from us, our girls are solid. “They might not bring home the gold every time, but they’re there,” said Matheney.

The Wildcats notched a handful of top heat finishes starting out with the 200 yard medley relay as the team of Bethany Barrett, Hannah Williams, Hannah Worden and Danielle Bryan placed sixth. Williams had a spectacular swim in her 200 yard IM securing a third place within her heat. Teammates Bethany Barrett and Hannah Worden continued the momentum by placing first in their 50 yard freestyle heats, followed by Williams and Bryan. Newest Wildcat swim team member, Kyra Greenaway, debuted her talents during the 100 yard freestyle. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Barrett, Greenaway, Williams and Worden swam a 2:08.49, coming in right behind arch rival Jersey Shore with a time of 2:08:43. Senior, Bethany Barrett, added some points to the Wildcat scoreboard, as she placed eleventh over all in her 100 yard backstroke and swimming her personal best time.

“Everybody had a great day, especially coming off Christmas break, said Matheny.” “There was not much idle time over the holidays.  We held two-a-days, weather permitting, swimming about 28,000 yards that week – and that extra effort showed today.” “It was good to see the results of your training to see where you are at, it was a good benchmark for the team, and I am very pleased”

The Wildcats are home today against tough opponent St Mary’s. Meet starts at noon at the LHU Swimming Pool.

Forty-two Year Old Record Still Stands

The summer Bald Eagle Swim League keeps records for both meters and yards as central Pennsylvania pools fall into one of two categories.  It is interesting to note the number of old records that still stand.  The 10-and-under girls 100 meter IM was set in 1971 by Kathy Frazier (42 years ago) while the Lycoming College Swim coach, Jerry Hammaker, holds the boys 100 meter freestyle from 1978 (36 years old).  You can also download the meter records here.
