Promote Swimming!

Below is a newspaper clipping out of last week's Webb Weekly.  This is a weekly puyblication that goes out into every household in Lycoming County and parts of Clinton County.  It reaches over 58,000 homes.  The clipping is looking for team photos to publish and they mention SWIMMING.  Let's hope the swimming community takes advantage of this and submits the success of swimmers in central Pennsylvania.

So for example, why doesn't Lock Haven submit a photo of the 10-and-under undefeated boys? Tri-Town the undefeated 15-and-over boys?, Williamsport the 14-and-over boys?, Team photo of Loyalsock's All-Star Swim Team (since they won All-Stars)?

Local teams do a great disservice to their swimmers and the sport by not promoting activities and swimmer's accomplishments.

Shore Finishes Regular Season With Win Over Lock Haven

More to come later.

Jersey Shore Takes Meet Over Loyalsock (review from last week's meet)

Jersey Shore coaches were anticipating some tough match-ups against Loyalsock Thursday night and it didn’t help matters that Shore was missing some key swimmers in certain age groups. As a result, head coach Lee Thompson had to move some swimmers around to shore-up certain age groups.

His dilemma was with the 14-and-under girls where ace Cortney Breon was missing from the line-up. To add some strength to this group, he reached down into the talent heavy 12-and-under girls and brought up Oliva Edler, Briar Lehman, and Emma Butzler to add firepower. The move paid off as the 14-and-unders won, 42-32.

Not to say that this age group was without some excitement and controversy. The opening relay appeared to be in the bag for Loyalsock but a false start disqualified them and pushed Jersey Shore to the top. Ultimately, regardless of the disqualification, Shore had enough depth and strength to put up enough points on the board to win.

Edler led off the individual events with a clean swim in the 50 meter free followed shortly by a win in the 100 meter IM by Butzler. In the next event, Sapphire Naugle was able to able to capture 3 points in the 50 meter backstroke by placing second. Butzler and Edler went 1-2 in the 100 meter freestyle followed by a 1-2 finish in the next event, the 50 meter breaststroke, by Lehman and Edler. Teammates Olivia Bellomo, Madalyn Charnego, Sydney Rosencrance and Brianna Edmonds picked up an insurance point with a third place finish in the final relay.

race in the 100 yard freestyle
Coach Thompson would not have been able to remove some of his swimmers out of the 12-and-under girls unless he felt comfortable that the remaining girls could carry the load. “ We left it up to Gabbie Moore, Kendra White, the Stemler sisters, Cassie Kitchen, and the rest of the crew to come through,” said Thomspon.

The group dominated the evening, cruising to a 57-17 win. This was done by capturing the opening relay and every individual event. White and H. Stemler finished 1-2 in the 50 and 100 meter free with Moore, H. Stemler, and Kitchen going 1-2-3 in the 50 meter back. Moore also captured first in the 100 meter IM with the other Stemler sister, Olivia, touching the wall second. Loyalsock did capture the final relay as Anna Plotnikova, Justine Schulte, Gabi Raub, and Mia Zicolello finished ahead of Shore’s Trynity Lehman, Allison Schweikart, Elizabeth Osborn, and Haley Naugle.

Shore’s 15-and-under Jamie Mason provided the night’s nail biters with some very narrow wins. It was neck and neck in the 50 meter free as Mason was able to out-touch ‘Socks Molly Serfass by 1/100 of a second. It was almost just as close in the 100 meter fly as Mason won by 8/100s of a second over Loyalsock’s Marissa Gombosi.

Mill Hall Meet Details

Lock Haven Meet – Wednesday, July 27, 2011 @ Lock Haven (at the Mill Hall Community Pool). Meet starts at 6pm.

The bus will be in the Jersey Shore Elementary School parking lot at 4:15pm and will pull out at 4:30pm. Because of the meet last night, there is no signup sheet for this bus. If your swimmer would like to ride the bus to the meet, make sure they are on time so it doesn’t leave without them.

If you are driving your swimmer(s) to the meet, they must be at the pool at 4:45pm. Directions to the Mill Hall Pool are below.

From Jersey Shore – Take 220 South to the Mill Hall Exit (Wal-Mart, Lowe’s). Coming off the exit ramp, navigate to the left lane. At the intersection (traffic light) turn left onto Rt 150 and head to the very next intersection (Curt’s Smoking Ribs). Turn left onto Pennsylvania Avenue and continue on Pennsylvania Avenue for 1 or 2 blocks. Make a right onto either 3rd street or 2ndstreet (I think you may be able to use either). Both streets kind of “run into” the pool parking area.

Swimmers do not need to ride the bus home if they rode to the meet that way. Parents, just please tell the coaches if you are taking your child with you after the meet.

WELLSBORO Meet Details

If riding the bus, be at the JS Elementary Parking Lot at 3:20 PM – bus leaves at 3:30 PM. If riding with parents, please be at Wellsboro no later than 4:30 PM.
Our warm-ups are at 5:00 PM – meet starts at 5:30 PM. If riding the bus home, we will be stopping at McDonalds in Wellsboro (send money).

Directions: Take Route 287N to Wellsboro. Take a right onto Main Street. Proceed to next light (Queen and Main), turn left, proceed 1 block, Packer Park is on your right. Parking behind Sr. Center or across the street.

Team Area - At our last away meet against Loyalsock we noticed that the kids did not stay in the team area and we had to do a lot of searching for them during the course of the meet. It gets a little stressful on the coaches and team captains to have to constantly look for the kids. Coaches have told the swimmers before that they MUST stay in the team area at all times. If you notice that your child keeps coming to you, make sure you ask them if they have told their team captain where they are. Unfortunately, the referee will not hold up the meet so we can look for a child for their event.

Clean Up – During both home and away meets we need to clean up the team area after the meet is over. Make sure that your swimmer cleans up their area even if they leave the meet early.

Jersey Shore's First Kid's Triathlon A Success

It was hot!  I mean flat out oven-hot yesterday for the Jersey Shore Kid's Triathlon.  Over 50 kids challenged themselves and the elements.  Race organizers prepared for the event as best they could, in light of the heat, and will be detailed throughout the blog.  This event NEVER could have happened without the participation of volunteers.  Additional pictures can be viewed here.
Below is a pictorial of the event just to give you an idea of the flavor of the evening.  Click on pictures to enlarge.

Bike area where kids/parents placed bikes.  Normally, the sock and shoes would be placed here but it was to hot for the kids to run over the pavement.  The clothing transition from the swim to run would take place in the Jersey Shore pool area.

Jersey Shore Mayor Dennis Buttorf set up his 1970's shag carpeted motor home to serve as the registration table.  This is where kids picked up their colored t-shirts (depending on age group) that also had the timing chip on it.

Team Area - At our last home meet against Williamsport we noticed that the kids did not stay in the team area and we had to do a lot of searching for them during the course of the meet.

Thanks from the Coaches….

Shore Swimmers Top the Williamsport Waves (review from last week)

With the first week of competitive swimming under his belt, Jersey Shore head coach Lee Thompson is starting to see the pieces fall into place. “I was happy with the times in our first meet with Tri-Town but not overly impressed,” said Thompson. “In the meet against Williamsport, I saw swimmers getting a little more comfortable and am more impressed now.”

Outstretched arms propel
Jersey Shore’s 12-and-under
Kollen Walters down the
stretch in the 50 yard butterfly.
That is not to say he let his swimmers get comfortable for long. “I placed many of the swimmers outside their comfort events to see what they could do,” said Thompson. Although he let his 15-and-under girls freestyle specialists swim their event, the 100 yd freestyle (where Maddi Thompson, Jamie Mason, and Sophie Hatalsky took all three tops spots respectively) he also placed them in some events they rarely swim.

In the 100 yd breaststroke, Thompson easily cruised to a win with a time of 1:17.69 followed by teammate Alainah Rosencrance. It wasn’t a teammate that was chasing Mason in the 100 yd individual medley but YMCA National Qualifier, BethAnn Schwoyer from Williamsport. It was a race to the wall where Mason out-touched Schwoyer by 35/100 of a second. Shore’s Rosencrance picked up third. Schwoyer, Williamsport’s head coach and swimmer, bounced back quickly in the 15-over’s next event by taking the 100 yd backstroke with her sister, Jessica, getting second.

Mason was also placed in the 100 yd fly where her competition was with teammate Lindsay Dudek. Dudek pulled away from Mason in the last 25 yards to win by one second.

This older age group put the finishing touches on a 53-21 win as Shore’s Kortnee Blair, Brittney Younkin, Natasha Harkey, and Hatalsky seized the final relay. The final point of the meet was obtained when Shore’s foursome of Rebecca Schweikart, Mojave Bovard, Brittany Moyer, and Toby Letterman pulled into third.

Shore in the 14-and-under boys.
The girls were equally dominant at the other end of the age spectrum, as the 8-and-unders posted a 46-7 win. It started off with Josie Gansell, Allison Moore, Meaghan Keegan, and Isabelle Griswold swimming away with the opening 100 yd medley relay. Griswold went onto capture the 25 yd freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly and Moore taking the 25 yd breaststroke. Their dominating performance was finished with Gansell, Courtney Lehman, Sarah Misquitta, and Moore finishing first in the 100 yd freestyle relay.

Two Jersey Shore swimmers set new summer swim team records as Max Mason set the new bar for the 12-and-under boys 50 yd freestyle at 0:29.75 and Sam Keegan replaced a 4-year old record in the 10-and-under girls 25 yd breaststroke with a time of 0:18.75.

Shore vs Lock Haven Postponed

Tonight's match-up between Jersey Shore was postponed until next Wednesday. July 27.  The picture below shows the Shore team getting word that the meet was postponed due to thunderstorms rolling through the area.  Notice the storm clouds in the background.

Bald Eagle Swim League Championship Information

Our team just recently received information about the championships meet to be held on Saturday, July 30th at the Williamsport Memorial Pool. Championships is a TEAM event and is not based on ability level, but IS based somewhat on the number of swimmers each team enters in events. Unlike normal meets (which only “score” 1st, 2nd, and 3rd) Championships scores all the way to 12th place, so many swimmers have a much improved chance of scoring points for the team and earning medals or ribbons!!

Historically, because of our numbers, the Jersey Shore Swim Team has been very competitive, winning the meet several times over the last few years. But, we can’t do it without the large number of our swimmers. Our coaches encourage all swimmers to participate in this fun event! The cost is $2.50 per event.

DETAILS (form below)

  • It will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the Williamsport pool.
  • Morning Session: 12 & Unders, 14 & Unders, 15 & Over
  • Afternoon Session: 8 & Unders, 10 & Unders
  • Events
    • The kids need to start thinking about what they want to swim in Championships. If they know what they want to swim, and have not yet been put in that event in a meet, let the coaches know. Each event that they request to swim in Champs needs to have a time from a recent meet.
    • Each swimmer is allowed to swim 4 events – either 2 individual events and 2 relays or 3 individuals and 1 relay. Relay events will be determined by the number of kids who wish to swim in a relay.
    • Cost is $2.50 per event. Make checks payable to Jersey Shore Summer Swim Team.
    • Forms are below for each swimmer to complete. Please print this form and return it even if your child is not swimming at Champs. Hopefully most of the team will participate!

T-Shirts – The cost will be $10 or $12 each. Forms are below  Make checks payable to Jersey Shore Summer Swim Team.

Timers & Officials – Each team is required to provide a minimum of 6 timers and 4 officials per session. If you have not already volunteered for this meet, please see Jody Jolin.

Make sure all money is in an envelope with swimmer’s name.

All information is due back to the coaches or Shelley Moore by Wednesday, July 20th.

Shore Opens Bald Eagle Swim League With Win Over Tri-Town

You would need one hand to count the number of losses the Jersey Shore Summer Swim Team has experienced the past several years. Since 2005, they have compiled 30 wins to their one loss (they have tied nine times). This success can partly be attributed to the steady hand of former coach Patty Kennelly. First year coach, Lee Thompson, has continued the winning tradition by leading his team in the season opener over Tri-Town, 7-3, on Tuesday night at the Jersey Shore Borough Pool.

Jersey Shore swimmers start to warm up for the Tri-Town meet.

talk to swimmers before the start of the meet
The night wasn’t easy as Thompson was exposed to the controlled chaos of Jersey Shore’s 130 swimmers. “The hardest part of tonight’s meet was getting the kid’s organized, who’s out with sickness and injuries and come up with a final line-up, said Thompson. “It seemed like there was a lot of chaos but the age group captains and parents have helped a lot and taken a large burden off the coaches’ shoulders.”

Today's Summer Swim Team Announcements

Wednesday: Practice - both morning and evening sessions as normal.

Thursday: Home Swim Meet against Williamsport: - Pirate Theme

The Williamsport and Jersey Shore coaches are going to try something a little fun with this meet and make it a themed meet. We would like to ask everyone to dress in PIRATE attire for this meet (except the kids should still wear their team suits). Get creative over top of your team suit! Get an eye patch? How about a red bandana? Braid your hair? Mascara mustaches? Awesome!! (My Allison is trying to put together a mermaid costume for the Pirate theme!) If anyone has any PIRATE decorations we could use to make the pool more festive, please bring them along. We are also looking to have PIRATE music playing until the meet starts. Does anyone have a soundtrack to any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Kids need to be at the pool at 4:45 PM. Don’t forget your concession stand food donation (and soda/Gatorade donation if you didn’t bring it Tuesday). Below is the list of workers for Thursday’s meet (timers/officials and concession stand).

FROM THE COACHES: If your child is NOT going to be at the meet on Thursday please let me (or the coaches) know ASAP. There were several swimmers who had not signed out of the meet, but did not show up Tuesday afternoon. When this happens, it affects the swimmers that they were scheduled to be in relays with. So, we are sorry if your swimmer only ended up having a few events, he or she may have originally been assigned to more, but had to be “scratched” if someone unexpectedly didn’t come to the meet.

FOR SALE: Since we are heading into a few intense weeks of swim meets, I got in a new supply of swim team items.

• Speedo Goggles (very good quality) – there are a variety of styles, sizes and colors. All goggles range from $10, $12, $15 and $20 a pair. See me at practice or the dip and dance to cool colors and styles!

• Swim Team Towels – from last year announcing our undefeated streak (orange tie-dye) - $10 each (there are only 1 or 2 of these left).

• Heavy Silicone Caps – Black, Orange, Green - $5 each

• Lighter Latex Team Caps – Black with the orange JS Swimming Logo OR Black with the ‘Swim for Shore’ logo - $3

• Water Bottles – Gray with Orange Logo - $3

Friday: Dip and Dance: ZUMBA Style!! Evening practice is cancelled, but don’t forget to support the team by coming to the pool Friday night for a cool new dip and dance theme! The swim team will be hosting a Dip and ZUMBA night at the pool! Zumba is super popular in the area and super fun, so for a $3 admission, you can spend some time dancing to Zumba on the land and swimming in the pool!!

UPDATES:

• Clothing Sale - I talked with the vendor for the clothing sale and right now, they are to be ready on Friday. If they are, I will pick them up and bring them to the dip and dance and Monday’s practice to distribute.

• Pictures – The photographer called me today and scheduled to deliver the pictures to me on Friday morning. Again, I will bring them to the dip and dance and Monday’s practice to distribute.

When Will This Obesity Talk Stop?

The new policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics, entitled "Children, Adolescents, Obesity and the Media," states: "American society couldn't do a worse job at the moment of keeping children fit and healthy -- too much TV, too many food ads, not enough exercise, and not enough sleep."

Closer to home, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states more people in Pennsylvania may be loosening their belt instead of tightening it.

Pennsylvania ranks 19th in the nation for the most obese adults, with more people becoming less active, sitting at the computer, playing video games or just sitting around and watching television.

England's government has released a statement saying that even infants should exercise. In the article, it states "For babies who can't walk yet, the government says physical activity should be encouraged from birth, including infants playing on their stomach and swimming sessions with their parents."

Bottom line - Why does the government and newspapers waste their time with this issue?  I suppose they need something to fill their newspapers or websites.  Most parents don't care.  Certainly our government officials don't care.  Many examples to choose from but let's look at the closing of pools in communities around Pennsylvania.  It is cheaper and easier to let the kids stay home. Let the computer/tv entertain our kids.  I wish the newspapers/blog sites would spend more time on more pressing issues like American Idol and the latest on Lindsay Lohan.
