GSVAL All Star Meet Pomp And Circumstance

There was always a grand entrance to the Bald Eagle All Star Meet every year and this year's Greater Susquehanna Valley Aquatic League All Star Meet was no different.  Meet results can be viewed here.

Jersey Shore swimmers add Jersey Shore pool water to the Loyalsock
Outdoor Swimming Pool to bless the meet.

It was a hot day but the Jersey Shore team area had plenty of
shade, both man-made and natural.

Jersey Shore All Star swimmers proudly march into the pool area
waving the flag and wearing team colors.

All flag bearers stand on the blocks to await the start of the meet.

Teams file into the area to await the start of the meet.

Girls 14-And-Under Final Relay Secures Team Win

While storms raced through Jersey Shore on Thursday night, the swim team was safely tucked away in Central Columbia's middle school indoor racing pool.  Jersey Shore was able to pull out a team win, 5.5 to 4.5 and finish the season above .500 (4-3-1).  Results of this meet can be found here (boys) and here (girls). Other times can be found on the left hand side of the blog under archived meets.

There were 80 events in Thursday's meet and somewhere in those 80 events, the course of the meet was decided.  Who knew it would be one of the final relays to be the deciding factor.  While almost all the age groups score were decided going into the final relay, the 14-and-under girls were in the battle of the night.

Yes, the foursome of Gabbie Moore, Briar Lehman, Emma Butzler, and Olivia Edler won the opening relay by over 4 seconds and Butzler captured the 50 and 100 yard freestyle while Moore touched the wall first in the 50 yard fly and back.  But the Blue Jays of Central Columbia won the 100 yard IM(Lauren Willie) and 50 yard breaststroke (Mallory Savage) plus numerous 2nd and 3rds in other events.  By the time the final relay rolled around, the Jays were up 33-31.

Moore led off the 200 yard freestyle relay and had a small lead after the 1st 50 yards over Central's Madison Crawford.  The lead vanished as Jillian Mott sped ahead of Shore's Briar Lehman.  In the third leg, Edler was playing catch-up and cut the lead down to about a body length.  Anchor Butzler was left to the task of erasing the rest of the deficit.  Giving chase, she was able to almost completely erase the gap by the turn and had to sprint the final 25 yards to touch the wall first by 76/100s of a second.

This first place finish by Shore followed by Central Columbia, at this point, had Shore up 37-36.  If Central's #2 relay could come in ahead of Shore's #2 then they could knot up the score.  Not to disappoint the black-and-orange faithful, the relay of Elizabeth Osborn, Cheyenne Greene, Trynity Lehman, and Victoria Bellomo captured third place and secured the age group win (the same foursome also took third in the opening 200 medley relay).

Soggy Week for Jersey Shore Swim Team

As most folks living in the area know, the stormy, rainy weather has not been ideal for swimming.  It has been an equally rough week for the Jersey Shore swim team against long-time opponents, Loyalsock and Wellsboro, in the new Greater Susquehanna Valley Aquatics League.

The 2012 season meeting between Loyalsock and Jersey Shore resulted in a tie.  It appeared that Loyalsock would squeak by with a win this past Tuesday as they had leads in the majority of the age groups heading into the final relays including the 8-and-under girls.  Shore remained competitive in this age group throughout the meet with the help of Mackenzie Gardner’s first place finishes in the 25 meter (m) butterfly and 50 m freestyle but the age group was still short going into the final 100 meter freestyle relay.

In an unorthodox move, Kate Butzler led off the 100 meter freestyle relay with the backstroke (one can swim any stroke in a freestyle event) and this created a small lead that she handed off to Celia Shemory.  Shemory reverted back to the more popular front crawl and opened up the lead even more that held for the rest of the race.  Teammates Julia Sorgen and Gardner finished the relay to come in first with a time of 1:58.80. This win resulted in enough points to regain the lead, 27-24, in their age group score and salvaged a 5-5 tie for the team score.

Wellsboro’s recent dominance over Jersey Shore continued this past Thursday but not without a fight.  The 14-and-under girls of Wellsboro came into Thursday night’s meet with an unblemished record and it took all they had to keep that alive.

Shore’s girls ran up a deficit immediately after the opening 200 yard (yd) medley relay by coming in 2.5 seconds behind Wellsboro.  From here, the Shore girls started to claw back into the point standings by winning all the individual events.

Jersey Shore's Gabbie Moore turning on the 50 yard butterfly
and heading back up the lane.  Wellsboro's Jillian
Berguson (in the lane below Moore) was already on the
way back up the lane.
Moore captured the 50 yd freestyle and backstroke but it was the 50 yd butterfly that made a statement.  By the time Moore got to the wall for her fly turn, Wellsboro’s Jillian Berguson was already there and gone, swimming up the lane on the final 25 yards.  Moore gave chase and had just enough in her to catch up and pass Berguson by 2/100s of a second.

Her teammate, Emma Butzler took care of the other three individual events by winning and setting new team records in the 100 yd IM (previously held by her but faster time)  and 100 yd freestyle (previous record set in 2008 by Jamie Mason) and  50 yd breaststroke (previous record set in 2006 by Danielle McPherson).

Jersey Shore was up 35-29 going into the final 200 yd freestyle relay and was unable to hold off a Wellsboro 1-2 finish that led to a black and orange age group loss 38-36.  Wellsboro won the meet with a team score of 7.5-2.5.

Above, Shore’s Luke Engel turning off the wall in his 50 yard butterfly to clock in a time
of 1:09.31 against Wellsboro. Below, Engel Engel in the breaststroke leg of
his 200 yard  individual medley where he took second place against Wellsboro.

The Jersey Shore Swim Team hosted Mifflinburg this past Saturday morning in a Greater Susquehanna Valley Aquatic League dual meet in which over 100 swimmers competed.

Of the 58 individual events, Shore captured 33 with two triple winners, nine double winners and twelve single event winners.  In addition, the black and orange crew took 12 out of 17 relays to run their season record to 2-2.

Nash Berfield (swimmer in top lane) sprinting to the
wall ahead of Mifflinburg’s Bo Gethel for a first place
finish in the 50 yard freestyle in the boys
12-and-under age group.
The triple winners included swimmers in two different age groups, as Nash Berfield, in the 12-and-under boys' age group, won the 50 yard (yd) freestyle in :29.97, the 100 yd individual medley (IM) in 1:16.82, and the 50 yd backstroke  in :37.18.

Sam Keegan won all three of her individual events in the 11-12 girls' age group, taking the 50 yd breaststroke in :37.49, the 50 yd butterfly in :33.15, and the 100 yd IM in 1:12.29.

Keegan is also part of the only undefeated age group, boys and girls, left on the team with their 55-18 win over Mifflinburg.  She anchored a strong 200 yd freestyle relay with Lauren Creveling, Natalie Charnego, and Jessica Creveling.

A little bit of sibling rivalry was on display in the 100 yd freestyle as Lauren and Jessica dueled it out over the four lengths of the pool.  Lauren out-touched her sister by 1.5 seconds for a 1-2 finish.

The other winner in this age group was Dayanaira Watson  with a win in the 50 yd backstroke over teammate Katie Hendricks

One Jersey Shore team record fell by the wayside as Emma Butzler smashed a 16 year old record by nearly 2.5 seconds in the 100 yd IM previously held by Allison Taylor.

Shore’s Natalie Charnego swims the butterfly leg on the girls 21-and-under 200 medley relay.  They would go on to win the event in a time of 3:01.40.

Jersey Shore’s Madalyn Charnego takes a peek at the competition in the girls 18-and-under 200 yard freestyle.
