Jersey Shore Swim Parents - Will Travel to Water
In order for Jersey Shore swimmers to get to all the meets this past very busy weekend (YMCA Pentathlon at LHU, USA Last Chance Meet at PSU, and High School PIAA District 4 meet at Bucknell U., see results here) they usually need a parent or two to cart them around.
Swim parent Shelley Moore saw it all this past weekend! Look at her pictures as she travelled around central Pennsylvania to catch all the Jersey Shore swimming action.

Friends on Land/Rivals in the Water
Emma Butzler and Hanna Everhart are friends; they do the texting thing, slumber parties together, and go to the same swim clinics. But they are also rivals as Butzler swims for the Jersey Shore YMCA and Everhart for the Bloomsburg Y. A rivalry only exists when both competitors are evenly matched and it is anyone's guess who will come out on top during competition. The two have been racing against each other for years and it has been a back and forth competition.
Earlier this swim season, they squared off in the 100 yard freestyle at the Bellefonte Invitational where Everhart out-touched Butzler by 11/100s of second. Although neither of them won the 200 yard freestyle event, Everhart had a much more dominating swim against her friend and rival as she beat her by over 2 seconds.
The two matched up again in the dual meet season in the 200 yard individual medley (IM). It appeared as Butzler had the race in hand as she lead by a few body lengths after the backstroke and butterfly legs. Everhart chewed up the lost yardage in the breaststroke leg to take a lead that she would not relinquish, touching the wall first by 19/100s of a second over Butzler.
The Central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim League Championships this past weekend provided another opportunity for the two to race. Their first meeting, although not head-to-head, was in the 200 medley relays. Everhart's strong swim in the anchor position was enough to propel her relay to a win over Shore's Gabbie Moore, Sam Keegan, Butzler, and Kendra White by 66/100s of a second.
The one-on-one competition was with the 200 IM where BAY's Everhart was the number one seed followed by Butzler. She was also facing the rest of the BAY team as the other four lanes were occupied by Everhart's teammates. The race started to play out in a similar fashion to the January dual meet as Butzler led throughout the first two legs but this time she did not fade in the breaststroke. Her effort was not only enough to win the event but set a new league record. Check out the video below and the results can be viewed here. Best For Last- Moore Captures Win On Final Swim Of The Day
Gabbie Moore was an underdog all day at the 2012 Central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim League championship meet this past Saturday. She was part of a 200 medley relay that was seeded behind Bloomsburg Y (BAY) but even though the foursome of Moore, Sam Keegan, Emma Butzler, and Kendra White dropped a second in the final, they were unable to topple the favorite and finished second.
Her next event was the 50 yard freestyle where she was seeded second behind BAY swimmer Hanna Everhart. A hard swim almost dropped her time by one second but still not enough to unseat Everhart.
She was seeded third in her next race, the 50 yard butterfly, behind Everhart and Butzler where she finished third.
It was her last swim of the day where Moore made her statement. Seeded second behind BAY's Rebecca Decker (yes, Bloomsburg was incredibly tough) in the 50 yard backstroke, she dropped over 2 seconds to not only capture the event but set her personal best time. Video of her race can be viewed below and results can be viewed here. Moore is in lane 4 with Decker in lane 3 (lane 1 is at bottom of the video with lane 6 at the top)

Anchors Feel the Weight of the World
Anchors on the relays have one of two roles; fight off a challenge to maintain the team's lead or chew up yardage to catch the leader. Jersey Shore's 8-and-under boys 100 free relay placed their anchor swimmer, Caleb Stemler, in one of those positions.
Shore's Aaron Baker, Dylan Kitchen, and Owen Staggert fought to maintain a close swim against number one seed Lock Haven before handing off to Stemler. Watch the video to catch the result. Lock Haven is in lane 3 and Jersey Shore is in lane 4 (lane 1 is at the bottom of the video and lane 6 is at the top of the video)

The morning session will start at 10:00 AM
Afternoon Session – 12 & Unders, 14 &Unders, 15 &Over
Please have the kids at the pool by 1:30 PM
Our warm-ups are 2:00 – 2:30 PM in Lanes 1, 2, 3
The afternoon session will start at 3:00 PM
Have the kids bring all their stuff into the gym area – there should be a sign to identify our team area. This is where the kids MUST stay for the entire meet.
It is also a little chilly in this gym so make sure the kids have plenty of warm clothes. Don’t forget to bring extra towels and wear your team suits and caps!!
Make sure the kids bring something to keep them occupied – cards, games, etc. – anything that will keep them sitting in the team area – BUT nothing bouncy!!
The seeding area will also be in the gym. An announcement will be made when it is time for a specific event. The kids are then placed in their proper heat and lane and then brought down to the pool.
Swimmers are asked to be dry and wear shirts and footwear (flip flops) when they leave the gym to go to the concession stand or spectator area. They must also wear something on their feet when they go down for their events to the pool area as the steps get quite slippery.
Parents are not allowed on the pool deck. Flash photography is not permitted at the start of each race.

Community Leaders With Vision
Howard Thompson of Jersey Shore recently passed away and his obituary can be viewed here. Upon reading his life story, you get feel that he loved his family and community.
One of his achievements that live on today is Jersey Shore's public swimming pool. In the February 12, 2012 edition of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, it states, "Involvement in the community was important to Howard and together with Jane they helped organize the campaign to build the public swimming pool; delivered food to the elderly through Meals on Wheels and were active in beautifying Torbert Village."

The Zoltoski's Passion For Swimming Lives On
The posting below was originally posted on February 2nd, 2011. It is a good time to review the affect of volunteers on the sport of swimming as the 32nd Zoltoski Swimming Pentathlon is right around the corner. For those interested, this year's registration form can be found here.
John passed away in the 1990’s and the parents named it the John Zoltoski Pentathlon. Mary Ann carried the torch until her death in 2008. At that time, the YMCA Swim Team Parents Association changed the name to better reflect the effort of both supporters, the Zoltoski Memorial Pentathlon.
“Kids return year after year because they tell me that it’s fun”, said Jones. “Mary Ann always had a story about swimming. My favorites were the ones that involved kids a little rough around the edges and the discipline of the sport that eventually straightened them out”.
It’s pretty safe to say that fundraising is an integral part of youth sports. It helps defray costs for equipment facilities, maintenance, end of season gifts, etc. The Lock Haven swim parents were faced with the same issue several decades ago and came up with a novel approach to raise funds; a swimming pentathlon. What at one time was a simple fundraiser has turned into a premier swimming event in central Pennsylvania.
The pentathlon was the brain child of John and Mary Ann Zoltolski along with several other swim parents who in 1980 created a race in which each athlete swims in four individual events: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. The times for each event are added together and the seeding for the last race, the individual medley (combination of all 4 stokes in one event) is based on those times. After all five events, the swimmer with the lowest accumulation of times is the winner.
John and Mary Ann had a strong interest in swimming as their three kids started swimming at a young age and continued on through high school. “John and Mary Ann loved swimming because they felt that it taught sportsmanship,” said Loretta Jones, longtime friend and ex-president of the Lock Haven YMCA Swim Team Parents Association. “In addition, the Zoltoskis’ believed that not only was it a team sport but a sport that allowed an individual to excel”.John passed away in the 1990’s and the parents named it the John Zoltoski Pentathlon. Now in its thirtieth year, it attracts swimmers from all over central Pennsylvania and the Zoltolski’s swimming passion lives on.

Tough Week for Jersey Shore YMCA Swimmers
It doesn’t take long to recognize the accomplishments of Bloomsburg High School swimmers by the number of banners draping their home pool at Bloomsburg Middle School. Their success most recently is where the boy’s team has been District IV champions since the 06-07 season (2009 AA PIAA State runner-up). This success does not appear in ninth grade but as a result of a YMCA program that funnels technical swimmers up the pipeline. Jersey Shore ran into that pipeline this past weekend as the Bloomsburg YMCA (BAY) won the day by taking 8 of the 10 age groups. However, there were two age groups where Jersey Shore showed some fight.
The 10-and-under girls won their grouping by capturing both relays and all the individual events. “This was their first win of the season”, said head coach Dave Keegan, “and as a group they swam much faster than previous meets.” It started off well when Jordon O'Connor, Isabelle Griswold, Taylor Fleming, and Cheyenne Gansell took the 200 yard medley relay over BAY by over 15 seconds. The foursome then went on to dominate the individual events as the meet progressed. Fleming captured the 50 yard butterfly and freestyle; O'Connor the 100 yard individual medley; Griswold the 100 yard freestyle; and Gansell the 50 yard breaststroke. The only individual event these four girls did not take was the 50 yard backstroke but teammate Isabella Hale fought off BAY's Sarah McHenry by 29/100s of a second to keep the winning streak alive. The medley relay quartet also joined together to win the 200 freestyle relay.
The other Shore age group win was the 8-and-under boys. This was a win attributed to depth as they had the numbers over BAY. Caleb Stemler led the charge by picking up 15 points with wins in the 25 freestyle and butterfly plus the 50 freestyle. Points were accumulated with Aaron Baker finishing second in the 25 yard freestyle and backstroke, Owen Staggert touching second in the 25 yard freestyle, and A. J. Kitchen capturing third in the25 yard backstroke. Results can be viewed here.
Last week's meet against East Lycoming YMCA (ELY) was a bit more successful as Shore was able to capture an additional age group in a 7-3 loss. While the 8-and-under boys were the only age group win on the male side, the 14 and the 12-and-unders were winners in female age groups. Results can be viewed here.
“We swam some fast teams the past week but it pushes our swimmers, especially with championship coming up where we would like to see a strong showing,” said Keegan. With the dual meet season over, Shore swimmers are now gearing up for the Central Pennsylvania YMCA Swim League Championships at Lock Haven's Zimmerli Pool on February 18.
