Area swimmers finished several meets last week against local and regional teams. Jersey Shore met up earlier in the week with Tri-Town (Muncy area) and escaped with a 5-5 tie. The Mill Hall Fighting Muskrats swam against Troy and had their best showing yet. They nearly pulled out a win but came up short, eventually losing 6-4. Mill Hall's successful age groups in the Troy meet were the 8-and-under boys, 38-0; 10-and-under boys, 43-17; 12-and-under boys, 28-26 and the 15-and-over girls, 42-18.
Although Mill Hall’s 12-and-under girls lost 41 – 31, head coach Carol Matheney said her girls “had a great meet”. The medley relay comprised of Isabelle Gabinsky, Kyra Greenaway, MacKayla VanGorder, and Madison Myers came in second with a time of 3:01.62. Gabinsky and Myers later partnered with teammates Emily Walbridge and Michelle Haftl to capture the final 200 freestyle relay. Haftl was also able to secure two individual wins in the 100 yard individual medley and 50 yard butterfly. Ciera Strouse swam the 100 freestyle for a second place finish with a time of 1:35.00 and two third place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke and butterfly. Greenaway had a second place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 39.64 and a third place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. Walbridge scored 3 points with her second place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke with a time of 49.75.
Mill Hall then traveled across Pine Creek to take on Jersey Shore. This is a meet that Shore head coach, Patty Kennelley, looks forward to every year as both head coaches worked together for several years during YMCA winter swim. “It is always nice when we swim Mill Hall. Going into the meet knowing that you have a great relationship with the opposing coach makes the meet a little more enjoyable,” said Kennelley.
Matheney has slowly been rebuilding Mill Hall’s team in strength and number. Because of Mill Hall’s growing process and Jersey Shore’s large numbers, this match-up gives Kennelley a chance to try some different things. “I swim some kids in different events and give some kids more events than usual. This meet will also give the new kids on the team an opportunity to swim a couple of more events as to give the coaches a chance to see their progress since the beginning of the season,” says Kennelley.
The 12-and-under girls won 47-27 with several of the girls asked to try some new events. Olivia Stemler, typically swimming the freestyle and butterfly, swam the 50 yard backstroke and captured first just ahead of teammate Shawnelle Fenstermacher. Olivia Edler typically swims the 100 yard freestyle, Taylor Koch and Madalyn Charnego do not. They were able to sweep the top three spots in that order.
New experiences were in order for the 10-and-under boys. John Duda was placed in the 100 yard individual medley and 25 yard backstroke and touched the wall first in both races. This age group was also able to sweep an event as Dylan Fox, Kollen Walters, and Theron Sorgen took the 25 yard freestyle respectively.
Jersey Shore went on to win the Mill Hall meet 10-0. Mill Hall’s next contest is against Wellsboro at Robert Packer Pool in downtown Wellsboro on Tuesday. Shore also swims on Tuesday against Troy in Mansfield.
