Jersey Shore Swimmers Defend Titles and Break Records At Arctic Classic

It is still a few weeks away before the battle of the West Branch waters takes place but both the Jersey Shore Bulldogs and Central Mountain Wildcat swimmers got a chance to measure each other up at the 2017 Arctic Swim Classic.  And in a preview of what to expect for the future dual meet, they had to look no further than the first event.

Central Mountain’s Avery Mahoney was able to hold off Shore’s Gabbie Moore in the opening backstroke leg of the 200 medley relay.  Rachel Marek opened a wider lead over Taylor Fleming in the breaststroke.  Shore’s Butzler was able to give chase to Olivia McGhee in the butterfly and hand off a small lead to her anchor Kendra White.  Central Mountain’s Mikayla Rich was now in the chasing position and out-touched White by 45/100s of a second.  The Wildcats finished third in the event with Shore placing right behind them in the four spot.

Both teams continued to size each other up through the individual events.  Probably the most glaring example was in the girl’s 100 yard backstroke where Shore and Central Mountain had more than half of the top ten seeds (4 for JS and 2 for CM).  Swimming beside each other in the two heats, Jersey Shore’s Butzler, Moore, Jordon O’Connor, and Kendra White took 2, 3, 5, and 7 respectively. Intermixed with them were Central Mountain’s Mahoney and Rich at 6 and 9 respectively.

performance at the Clearfield Arctic Swim Classic
There is a bit of pressure when you are the reigning champion and top seed. The rest of the swimmers are eyeing upset and looking to make a name for themselves.  Jersey Shore’s Luke Engel was in that position in the 50 yard freestyle. He initially thought it would come from the Clearfield High School swimmers on either side, but he had to fight off a swimmer from a unexpected lane.  St. Mary’s Ben Koss was in the outside lane, far from Engel’s middle lane. “I have seen him swim before and I knew I was going to have to watch him,” said Engel.  Sure enough, it wasn’t the swimmers on either side of him that were the threat, rather Koss hiding on the outside lane. “I kept my eye on him the whole race”.  Engel was able to hang on and successfully defend his title from hard charging Koss. It was an added bonus that Engel broke his own school record in this event.

Engel also was the top seed in the 100 yard butterfly.  In this case, Clearfield’s freshman Luke Mikesell was looking for the upset.  He got it by beating Engel by 65/100s of a second.  As a result of the close race, Engel broke his school record set earlier this week.

Engel’s teammate on the girls’ side was in a little different situation.  Butzler had the pressure to defend her 200 yard freestyle title and meet record but was seeded second behind DuBois’ Gabrielle Wayne.  After the first 50 yards, Butzler was behind  by 4/100s.  In the next 50 yards, Butzler dug in and passed Wayne.  She widened the lead in the next 100 yards, not only winning but breaking the meet record.

“We came in this meet to just have some fun,” said Shore’s head coach Jenna Brooks.  “But as the meet progressed, the girls were in the thick of it.  It was a fight for the girls to capture second place overall team score.  I told our 400 yard free relay that they had to finish high in order to secure second.”

They girls coasted to a second place finish in the relay and locked down a second place team finish (highest since 2011) while the boys finished 11th. Central Mountain girls took fifth while the boys finished 5th.

Divers Beware

Jersey Shore’s head coach, Jenna Brooks, was a little worried with this week’s two away meets.   Match-ups were going to take place in pools that had diving boards; hence Jersey Shore was going up against divers.

Many years ago, the diving boards were removed from the Jersey Shore High School Pool.  As a result, the school’s diving program became non-existent.  Not a big deal when teams visited the JS Pool.  Visiting team divers just had to sit and watch the meet unfold.  It is problematic when Shore travels to a pool that has a diving board.  The team then has to watch their opponents rack up points while watching deckside.

Earlier in the week, Shore’s girls were able to overcome the diver disadvantage against Williamsport in a 98-85 victory, while the undermanned boys lost.

Thursday’s meet against Lewisburg was even trickier for the visiting Jersey Shore Bulldogs.  Not only was the match-up taking place in a pool with diving boards (Bucknell University), but it was a tri-meet with Mount Carmel.  In a tri-meet, each team can only field two swimmers instead of the usual three as in a dual meet.

The girls easily won over Mt Carmel, 77-16 but it was the action between Lewisburg that came down to the wire.  Just like the Williamsport meet earlier in the week, Shore ran out to a lead, 20-14, in the first four events.  Then it was the divers turn.  Lewisburg was able to regain the lead as they leaped over the Bulldogs to a 21-20 advantage.
Jersey Shore swimmers get ready for tri-meet against Lewisburg and Mt Carmel

However, the lead was quickly erased in the next event as the Moore sisters (Gabbie and Allie) went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly.

Shore’s advantage would hold up until the last individual event; the 100 yard breaststroke.  Lewisburg was able to take the top two spots and head into the final relay with a one point lead, 46-45.

The same Jersey Shore foursome that opened the meet with a win in the 200 yard medley relay were now faced with a must win situation in the final 400 yard freestyle relay.  Gabbie Moore, Taylor Fleming, Kendra White, and Emma Butzler stormed to 26 second win over second place finisher Lewisburg.  For added security, Shore’s second relay of Alexa Shadle, Veronicia Sanders, Briar Lehman, and Gabrielle Bellomo picked up a point with a third place finish to close out the meet 52-49.

“These girls just have a lot of talent and depth,” said Brooks.   “We had to be creative in designing this line-up to counter the tri-meet set-up with divers.”

The boys lost to Lewisburg but were able to defeat Mount Carmel.

Next up for the team is this weekend’s Arctic Classic.

Flashback Friday - The Clearfield Arctic Classic

Several years of blogging have occurred at the Jersey Shore Swim blog with over 900 stories and articles posted.  With that in mind, the Jersey Shore Swim blog will occasionally pull out an occasional favorite or interesting item from the archives to share with readers (plus some interesting old stuff never posted) in a series called Flashback Friday.

Big weekend swim meet for both Jersey Shore and Central Mountain High School as they and several other swim teams compete in the Arctic Classic.

Record Setting Night for Jersey Shore Swimmers

Many years ago, the diving boards were removed from the Jersey Shore High School Pool.  As a result, the school’s diving program became non-existent.  Not a big deal when teams visited the JS Pool as the visiting team divers had to sit and watch the meet unfold.  It is problematic when Shore travels to a pool that has a diving board.  The team has to watch their opponents rack up points while watching deckside.

This scenario plays out on a rotational basis every time Williamsport and Shore meet up.  Last year, the Millionaire girls visited Jersey Shore.  While Shore won by eight points, Williamsport’s divers sat and watched the meet unfold. This year, the meet took place at the Williamsport High School Pool where their divers could run up the point total on Jersey Shore.

The Shore girls were ahead by ten points by the time the meet got to the diving events.  Williamsport was able to erase that gap and spring ahead by three as they finished 1-2-3.

Staring down a deficit, the Moore sisters (Gabbie and Allie) quickly regained the team lead by going 1-2 in the next event, the 100 butterfly.  Jordon O’Connor also added a point with her fifth place finish.

Freshmen contributed a large part to Shore’s ability to overcome the lack of scoring divers.  Taylor Fleming and O’Connor contributed in big ways with solid wins in the 100 yard breaststroke and 50 freestyle respectively.  Fleming joined the upperclassmen Gabbie Moore, Emma Butzler, and Kendra White to capture the 200 medley relay.  The all freshmen foursome of O’Connor, Allie Moore, Leslie Shadle, and Maegan Sorgen tacked on two points with a third place finish in same relay.

The girls won 2 of the 3 relays and 8 of 9 individual events (lost the diving event) on route to a 98-85 victory.  In addition to the wins, Butzler broke her own school record in the 200 individual medley by 0.54 seconds.
Jersey Shore’s Taylor Fleming out in front of the 100 yard breaststroke.  She would go on to win the event.

The Jersey Shore boys were outmatched by Williamsport and fell 102-36.  However, Senior Luke Engel was able to break two long-standing records in the 200 yard individual medley (previous Brett Ulsamer, 2009) by 0.41 secs and the 100 yard butterfly (previous Eric Gephart, 2005) by 0.34 seconds.

“I am really happy with the ways these kids are swimming,” said Head Coach Jenna Brooks.  “They are coming off of a week of high intensity training over the holiday break and really performing well in the water.”  Both the boys and girls are back in action with a meet against Lewisburg on Thursday.
