Wellsboro Escapes Tornado and Loss

Everyone knew storms were coming last night but it didn't bother the Lock Haven and Wellsboro swimmers as they were going to conduct their meet at the indoor pool at Lock Haven University. Well, some pretty intense storms moved through the county with major flooding in certain areas and tornado warning and possible sightings.  Even before the meet started, the swimmers were herded down into LHU's basement floor locker rooms to wait out the 1 hour 20 minute tornado watch.

Wellsboro came into the meet riding dominate performances over Williamsport and Sunbury/Northumberland by winning every age group in both boys and girls.  No such luck with Lock Haven as the Loggerheads took  four age groups and came close to winning a fifth to tie the meet.

Lock Haven Swims Past Jersey Shore

In the summer of 2010, the Jersey Shore swim team soundly defeated Lock Haven (then called the Mill Hall Muskrats) 10-0.  While despair and frustration could have set in, the Lock Haven swim community started to rebuild the program by investing into its future with swim lessons and stroke clinics.  While the following summer was another thumping, 9-1, it was apparent the youth movement was in full swing as times, strokes, and turns improved.  Last summer, the gap had almost vanished as Lock Haven was able to win four age groups to Shore’s six.

This past Thursday night, Lock Haven was able to showcase their investment into their youth as they swept the younger age groups (8-and-unders and the 10-and-unders) in both the girls and boys on route to a 7-3 win.
The girls 12-and-under

backstroke.  Shore’s Jordon O’Connor
(third swimmer from the bottom)
went on to win the event.

Lock Haven’s 10-and-under boys 39-11 over Jersey Shore was accomplished by the group winning 6 of 8 events.   It didn’t seem to matter what swimmer was inserted into the relays as they easily captured both.  The opening 200 yard medley relay of Leisher Gugino, Tyler Cygan, Elijah Persun, and Owen Persus won with a time of 1:22.87 over Shore’s Caleb Moore, Joshua Smith, Alex Butzler, and Lake Merryman.  It was almost a completely different set of swimmers in Lock Haven’s winning 200 yard freestyle relay with William Straley, Parker Orndorf and Jack Drouin joining Elijah Persun.

In between those relays, Lock Haven dominated several events by taking the three top scoring spots. E. Persun, O. Persun, and Gugino in the 25 yard freestyle; E. Persun, Cygan, and Gugino in the 50 yard freestyle; and O. Persun, Cygan, and Orndorf in the 25 yard breaststroke finishing 1-2-3 respectively.

A clean sweep of all the individual events was prevented with Shore’s Butzler capturing the 100 yard individual medley (IM) and butterfly and Dylan Kitchen taking third in the 25 yard breaststroke.

It was just the exact opposite with the girl’s 12-and-unders where Jersey Shore captured both relays and 4 out of the 6 individual events. Teammates Allison Panczyszyn, Jordon O’ Connor, Taylor Fleming, and Sam Keegan were able to string together fast enough times to capture both relays.  In between, Fleming and Panczyszyn took 1-2 in the 100 yard IM and Keegan and Panczyszyn the top two spots in the 50 yard breaststroke.

The closest race of the evening took place in the 50 yard freestyle as Keegan and Lock Haven’s Emma Persun raced to the finish line with Persun out-touching Keegan by 1/100s of a second.

Jersey Shore lost to Selinsgrove earlier in the week, 6-4, and looks to getting back on the winning track with a meet against Williamsport on Saturday (6/29).

Lock Haven No Longer Perennial Doormat

In a July 7, 2012 Lock Haven Express article, Lock Haven YMCA swim coach Joel Blesh stated the following:

“It wasn’t too long ago that Lock Haven was the perennial doormat in the Bald Eagle Swim League, losing many of the meets 10-0”, said head coach Joel Blesh.  “Not only are we competitive now, but we are building their skills and these kids are coming together as a team, having fun, and swimming fast”.

That statement came after a close 6-4 win by Jersey Shore in 2012.  Lock Haven rolled over Jersey Shore 7-3 last night.  Age group scores can be viewed here and meet results can be viewed here

Rain? No Matter To USA Swimmers

USA swimmers from the Jersey Shore, Lock Haven, and Williamsport area braved the early morning hour and rain to get in a practice at Loyalsock's long course pool.  Head coach Sue Smith (right side of picture, under umbrella) didn't feel the love for the water this morning.

Thirty-One “Party”

From Coach Shelley

Do you need any ‘swim gear’ to outfit your swimmer for these summer meets?  Maybe a drawstring bag in the team colors, with your swimmers name on it?  How about a roll up blanket that can be personalized?  Are you like me and have TONS of towels, change of clothes, suits and goggles in the back of your car?  Maybe you need a large utility tote to keep all your swimmers organized.  Does your swimming compete in multiple sports?  The items offered can be personalized and include a Bulldog Paw that is universal for multiple sports!

The summer swim team is having a Thirty-one “party” to raise funds for the end-of-the season banquet and gifts (and maybe another fun activity during the season).  All funds raised from the sale of items will directly benefit the swimmers on the team.  Attached is a flyer detailing the items available.  I also think you will be able to order from the regular June catalog if Black and Orange aren’t your style!  J

Date:  Tuesday, June11th

See you then!!!

Jersey Shore Swimmer Swims At the Jersey Shore

One of the great aspects of USA Swimming is being part of a large family.  The family is all over the US and where ever a swimmer travels, there is usually a USA team and practice facility nearby.  Emma Butzler, a Jersey Shore (PA) swimmer, was able to catch some training time at the Jersey Shore with the USA Swim Team Crest Dolphins in Wildwood, NJ during the cool and rainy weather.

Jersey Shore has a USA Swim Team in nearby Williamsport and information on that club can be found on their Facebook page here or their webpage here.

Area Pools Ready To Open

With the summer sun beaming on your skin this summer, it's sometimes a chore even to walk outside, knowing the pools of sweat that are soon to follow.

So you crank up the air conditioner and settle onto your sofa after having spent the day either avoiding the sun or laboring in it.

But there is a way to douse the hot weather and to make summer enjoyable again - take a dip in your local community pool.
