Bald Eagle Swim League Record Board -Yards

Not sure who the Bald Eagle Swim League (BESL) 'League Record Keeper' is (as per Bald Eagle Area Swim League Constitution here), but public access to league records is difficult to find.  Could be that it is a heavily guarded secret to be kept from the swim community.

Below is the best effort by compiling several different sources.  You can also view and download the record board from here.  The BESL site only lists records broken in 2011 that can be seen here.  It does not list any other records, old or new.  Were there any broken in 2012?

Wellsboro had a dynamite team this past summer....  could it be that they broke records?

Jersey Shore YMCA Girls Hard Work Paying Off

With several weeks of practice under their swim caps, the Jersey Shore 14-and-under YMCA girls exerted a bit of their dominant side in a weekend match-up against East Lycoming. The girls took eight of nine events in swimming to a 54-29 win.
The most closely contested race with the 14-and-under girls took place not against East Lycoming but between Jersey Shore teammates where White touched out Moore by 46/100s of a second in the 100 meter butterfly. Moore started the first leg with a blazing split of 37.60 seconds, almost 2 seconds over White, but White’s steady pace over the whole race was enough to get her to the wall first by the end of the race.

The 14-and-unders started their afternoon off with a win and a YMCA District qualifying time in the 200 meter medley relay with Gabbie Moore, Briar Lehman, Kendra White, and Olivia Edler. Anchorwoman Edler also went on to capture the two sprint freestyle events, the 50 and 100 while White easily won the mid distant 200 meter freestyle. Moore and teammate Olivia Stemler finished 1-2 in the 100 meter backstroke, respectively, while Lehman and Timber Merryman went 1-3 in the 100 breaststroke.

The only event the Jersey Shore girls did not win was the 200 individual medley in which the duo of Anna and Laura Zeigler took 1-2 and Shore’s Briar Lehman picked up a point with a third place finish. The foursome of White, Lehman, Edler, and Moore finished the afternoon by winning the final 200 meter freestyle relay and their teammates Cheyenne Greene, Merryman, Olivia Johnson, and Stemler taking second.

Shore's 8-and-under girls had to fight the whole afternoon to secure a 29-23 win.  The East Lycoming girls were able to win 4 of the 6 individual events but Jersey Shore's two wins in the relay with Sara Pecchia, Kayli Berry, Mackenzie Gardner, and Madelyn Gerst was enough to squeak by.  Gerst also finished first in the 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke.

Of the five girl's age groups, Jersey Shore won four (8, 10, 12, and 14-and-unders) and tied the 15-and-overs, 23-23.  The meet ended with East Lycoming winning 5.5 to 4.5.  Box scores can be viewed here and full meet results here.

Jersey Shore's next meet is on January 5th against the Lock Haven YMCA at the Jersey Shore High School Pool.

Lewisburg Sweeps Jersey Shore Boys/Girls Meets

Lewisburg entered this year's swimming season with an experienced roster of thirteen returners - including eight state qualifier from last years PIAA State Championship meet.  Jersey Shore has some returners but their only PIAA State Qualifier, Ian Endresen, graduated last year.

Caitlin Foley, Emily Maxwell and Lisa Steinhubl won four events apiece to lead the Lewisburg Green Dragons to a 121-49 win over Jersey Shore on Tuesday night.

On the boys side, the Green Dragons beat the Bulldogs 90-56 behind five swimmers — Thomas Brouse, Adon Shapiro, Sean Walker, Michael Sumfest, Kyle Shutt — who had at least two wins apiece.

Could Swimming Help With Academic Grades?

Interesting article on Yahoo! Sports blog ThePostGame.com on research showing that children who are taught to swim at an early age hit certain physical and developmental milestones faster than kids who learn later in life.  "Turns out, some of what you learn in the classroom (or in your day-to-day experiences) is similar to what you learn in a pool, says lead study author Robyn Jorgensen, Ph.D., a professor and senior fellow at the Griffith Institute for Educational Research."  Read the full blog article here.

YMCA Swimmers Kick Off Season

Youth winter sports kicked off this past weekend with wrestling matches and basketball games galore.  The swim season for area youth started with a splash in the Bellefonte Invitational Quad Meet for local YMCAs this past Saturday.

The Lock Haven Loggerheads finished second overall (behind Bellefonte - 2,537 .50 to 2,239) but their boys took first place.  “We had a lot of fast swims today and a lot of drops in time” said Colt Coffman, co-head Lock Haven swim coach. “Overall, our team’s technique is looking great. We still have some areas to improve on and will be working on them this week at practice.”

Strong showings in the freestyle relays propelled the boys up in the point standings with Simon Lins, Owen Persuns, Xavier Persuns, and Arthur McGuire tops in the 8-and-unders; Tyler Cygan, Leisher Gugino, Elijah Persun, and Will Straley first in the 10-and unders; and Thomas Cygan, David Orndorf, Jonas Tomalonis, and Jordy Sheets touching the wall first in the 12-and-unders.

Several Lock Haven boys also qualified for YMCA Districts.  Phil Rodo’s first place swim in the 15-and-over 100 yard backstroke was fast enough to make district cut times.  Rodo also qualified in the 200 yard backstroke and 50 freestyle.  Ethan Dale, 14-and-under, qualified in the 100 breaststroke and James Riccardo, 12-and-under, in the 50 freestyle.

While Jersey Shore finished fourth, their girls were only 211 points behind the leader, Bellefonte (1,370 to 1,159) and 56 points ahead of East Lycoming YMCA.  One of the reasons for the strong showing was the 10-and-under girls.  The foursome of Jordan O’Connor, Taylor Fleming, Isabelle Griswold, and Meghan Keegan took both the 200 medley and freestyle relays.  They also went on to capture five of the seven individual events; Griswold in the 50 freestyle and breaststroke, Fleming in the 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley, and 0’Connor in the 50 yard backstroke.  These first place finishes in both the individual and relay events were enough to also earn a trip to YMCA Districts March 9-10 in York, Pennsylvania.

Haven Swim School for Competitive Swimmers To Start Up On Monday

What is the Haven Swim School for Competitive Swimmers?
The Haven Swim School is proud to be offering training and technique clinics for local competitive swimmers for the 2012-2013 season. We will run our program as an ongoing series of competitive clinics that will be geared toward improvement from local competitive swimmers in the Central Pennsylvania region.  The proceeds of the Haven Swim School will benefit the Women’s Swimming program at LHU.

Who can participate?
This year we will be offering 2 types of groups.
Training Group- This is encouraged for swimmers 10 and up that have a very good grasp of all four strokes and are looking to push themselves. Our training sessions will consist of 3challenging 1.5 hour practices each week and will work all components of a competitive swimming program.
Technique Group- This group is for swimmers of all ages that have a grasp on the swimming strokes but are looking to improve their technique.Technique group will meet 2 times each week and will strictly work on strokes for 1 hour each time.
We will have a maximum of 30 participants in the training group and 25 participants in the technique group.

Why the change?
Though USA Swimming is a great opportunity (that is still offered), we feel that each swimmer had a different goal in mind when participating. We want to serve the swimming community of Central Pennsylvania and feel that a series of dependable clinics given by our coaches with the goal in mind of helping swimmers get faster is the new direction to go in. With this change, swimmers that are here to work exclusively on technique will get that opportunity to, and swimmers that want to train towards specific goals will also have that opportunity.

What are the prices?
Training Group- 1.5 hours $60/Month
Technique Group- 1 hour- $35/month

I liked USA Swimming? Can I still participate?
Absolutely! Though we are no longer a registered USA Swimming team, you can still participate as an “Unattached” swimmer. If you are part of a local YMCA team, you must register as unattached anyway. In the previous two years, 95% of our swimmers were registered this way.
Our coaches will remain registered through USA Swimming and we will assist you in the process of registering for USA Swimming if you would like to go this route.

Jersey Shore Hires New High School Swim Coach

A kid to water is like bees to honey; it's just too irresistible.  Jersey Shore's new head swim coach, Katrina Sinclair, couldn't help but be drawn to the water in her early years.  "We lived right next to a lake in Northern California so my mom had us swimming as babies," Sinclair said.  "My family had a boat and we spent countless hours on the lake swimming, skiing and fishing."

It was shortly after her baby years that she started swimming competitively at age five with no end in sight as she still swims competitively with the Williamsport Area Swim Club master's program.  In between then and now has been an experience through waters all over the US.

Although water is water anywhere you go, the climate around the water can be much different.  So it is no surprise that swimming in California was much different than central Pennsylvania.  Although Northern California can get cold in the winters, it is still a year round outdoor sport.  "Winters there are not snowy but they do get some cold temps, and lots of rain.  Swimming throughout the winter in the outside made us pretty tough.  I can remember putting tarps on and off the pool with icicles on them" said Sinclair.
Water is never very far away for Katrina Sinclair.
Island Pond Lake just outside of Stoddard, New
Hampshire is in the background and she considers
it the cleanest lakes she has ever swam in.
Katrina Sinclair with dog "The Cheat'.
But as tough as it was for the swimmers in northern California winters, it was tougher for the coach who stood on deck through it all.  "Lee Panttaja, who was my coach from the age of 9 through 18, would stand outside in the rain, sleet, whatever, and coach us every night", said Sinclair.  Whether it was this dedication of her coach through adverse weather or his coaching style, Sinclair grew to love and excel at the sport.

Looking for a new experience and a chance to interact with some distant family members, she headed for the direct opposite of cool Northern California winters to the brutal winter conditions of Buffalo (average snowfall is 93 inches).  Here, she swam Division I at the University at Buffalo and was team captain her senior year in 2003.

Swimming in a Division I program can be tough but add the responsibilities of team caption and your plate is full.  "Being team captain in college was an experience that I will always take with me," said Sinclair.  "Sometimes as captain you have make decisions that are not the most popular or easy and it can be difficult but in the end it is rewarding.  Participating in a Division I swim program for four years and keeping your academics up at the same time can be grueling and difficult in itself and being team captain intensifies that pressures.  But in the end it teaches you a great deal about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses."

iI should be noted that the University at Buffalo swim program produced seven swimmers that took part in the US Olympic Trials this past summer.

While continuing her master's and doctoral degrees at University at Buffalo, she gave back to the swim community by coaching at a high school and through a local USA Swimming team.  Employment opportunities eventually brought her and her husband to the area.

A new coach always brings new ideas and philosophies to their program and Sinclair is no different.  Whereas some coaching philosophy is to pound out the yardage, Sinclair's is more on technique.  "I want high school swimmers to learn proper form and technique.  I push quality over quantity", said Sinclair.  "I would rather swimmers give me 2,000 yards well than 6,000 sloppily."

Coaches have played an important role in her life and some of their lessons are passed on through Sinclair.  "My coach Lee (Panttaja) taught me this love of technique in the sport'" said Sinclair.  "I love to learn and teach new drills.  My college coach also instilled in us a love of hard work and persistence that I hope to pass on to high school swimmers.  Doing everything quality is not always the easiest route but no matter the results you finish knowing you gave it everything.  Swimmers will find that this approach benefits them not just in the pool but also in the classroom and also later the workplace."

But with many older swimmers, it is the love of water they desire to pass on to the younger generations.   "I try to instill an appreciation of the sport that will last them a lifetime.  Swimming is one of those sports that people can benefit from childhood well into their senior years", said Sinclair.

Jersey Shore opens up their swim season with a home meet against Bloomsburg High School on December 11 at 4:30 PM.
