Jersey Shore School Board Plans to Re-Evaluate Facility Use Policy

Youth sports and activities in Jersey Shore were expected to take a huge hit with a recently implemented school board policy.  It would cost a non-profit group $75 to use a facility for practice, events, and activities.  The cost of one time events could easily be covered but groups that meet daily over several months would have a difficult time paying the thousands of dollars in fees.

The policy would affect the YMCA (both swimming and after-school programs), youth wrestling, Little League baseball (Nippenose and Salladasburg fields), Legion baseball, youth cheerleading, American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and John Bower basketball (held at Nippenose Elem.) to name a few.

The topic was addressed last night at the Jersey Shore School Board meeting and part of the discussion can be viewed here.

Jersey Shore Swimmers and Wrestlers Hit Hard With New School Board Policy

The Jersey Shore School Board is implementing their new policy for  fees associated with Non-Profit, Non-School Related resident organization such as Little League and YMCA.

It will cost any non-affiliated school team $75/day to run a practice in a school facility.  So swimmers will pay the school district $375 to rent the pool for the week.  The Jersey Shore youth wrestling community will have to pay $375 before the coach can unlock the doors for the week.
Now add on the $25 fee per day to use the bathrooms and it comes to $500 a week for a team just to practice.

This will also apply to the youth cheerleading program and the Bastress team that plays basketball in the John Bower League.  Jersey Shore's Relay for Life is also expected to fall under this new policy as it uses a school facility (track and soccer field) plus restrooms and concession stand for over 30 hours (over 3 hours and costs increase)!  Reading this policy correctly, it will also cost Shore's Legion Post 36 big dollars to chase down fly balls at the high school ball field.

Let's keep on pushing kids to run the streets!

Jersey Shore's 12-and-Under Girls Have Record Setting Summer Season

The foursome of Gabbie Moore, Sam Keegan, Kendra White, Emma Butzler broke several records over the 2012 summer swim season.  On June 26, they broke the Bald Eagle Swim League (BESL) 200 meter medley relay record set of 2:29.46 in 1997 by Laura Gusmerotti, Danieel Sander, Alyson Taylor, and Lynsi Ulsamer by swimming 2:26.25.  A few weeks later, they broke that record by lowering it to 2:26.00.

They also set the new BESL record in the 200 yard medley relay on June 28 with a time of 2:10.65.  The old record was set in 1996 by Melissa Eck, Danielle Sander, Allison Taylor, and Amanda Bailey at 2:10.99.  They went on to lower that record on July 12 to 2:08.92.  A video of thier first place finish at the 2012 BESL Championship meet can be viewed below.

Reason #7 On Importance of Learning To Swim - Pretending To Be Olympic Divers

This is a continuing series in why everybody should learn how to swim as many activities take place around water.

One day after American diver David Boudia won the gold medal on the 10 meter platform, several swimmers from Jersey Shore, Lock Haven, and Williamsport took to Penn State to try their hand at the high dives.  Click on any of the pictures to enlarge (some neat facial expressions).

After passing the swimming test (little ones need to show they can
swim 25 yards and tread water for a few minutes), Lake jumped
into the water.

Jacob's flips don't seem as graceful as the ones on tv this past week

McCartney has a unique jumping style

Nash needed goggles to complete the dive

Alex's unique perspective on entry to the water
Lydia's flip was probably the best executed of the day

Emma trying the 1 meter diving board

No Penn State visit is complete without a stop at the Creamery

Is a Swim Conference Merger In The Works?

There is some talk of a possible merger of the Bald Eagle Swim League (BESL) and the Susquehanna Valley Swimming and Diving League (SVSDL).  See last year's post here to see the location of BESL's six teams and SVSDL's nine teams.   You can review their 2012 championship results here (although one wonders how many of their swimmers were swimming Junior Olympics that same weekend at PSU.

Coaching With The Big Dogs

This was in the August 8, 2012 edition of the Lock Haven Express.

Lock Haven Loggerheads head coach Joel Blesh spent the month of June at the Longhorns Swim Camp hosted by the University of Texas at Austin.

Swimmers from all around the world came to the Longhorns Swim Camp for a week of instruction and to learn from the staff.

The Longhorns staff is led by the head coaches of the Texas program Eddie Reese and Carol Capitani. Reese has also been the head coach of the Olympics on three different occasions and has won a record 10 national team NCAA Division I Team Championships. The camp is also headlined by nine Olympians from the United States, many of them medalists.

swim program, Eddie Reese (right)

"Everything about the camp was world class," said Blesh. "When swimmers travel in from different continents, you know it's big time."

Each day swimmers would have a full day of dry land activity, training, afternoon activities and stroke technique sessions. The campers would get a stroke session with each Olympian in their stroke specialty and were exposed to all four strokes while in Austin.

"The daily schedule was challenging, but rewarding for the swimmers. They worked so hard, but were around hundreds of other swimmers that all had at least one common interest," Blesh said.

Blesh was the only YMCA coach to be part of the staff composed of mostly college swimming coaches.

"It was great to be able to represent the Lock Haven Area YMCA on a staff that had some of the best the United States has to offer," said Blesh. "I am very proud of what the Loggerheads have been doing over the course of the past two years, and it was exciting to learn from the absolute best and bring that back to the Lock Haven area."

Local Jersey Shore and Williamsport Swimmers Compete in Junior Olympics

The summer 2012 Olympic Games are in full swing in London, England.  In order to get there, American swimmers were had to participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials, at the end of June, to determine the USA Olympic swim team.  These swimmers were all involved in USA Swimming which is the National Governing Body for the sport of swimming.  Locally, there are two USA swim clubs; the Haven Area Aquatics Club (HAAC) and the Williamsport Area Swim Club (WASC).

Members of these clubs include local swimmers who want to compete locally, regionally, and nationally.  HAAC and WASC are members of the Middle Atlantic USA swimming.  These swimmers compete in meets held across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland.  Depending on the swimmer’s times, they are invited to compete in highly competitive swim meets that include the best swimmers in the Middle Atlantic.  The culmination of the season is the Junior Olympic swim meet.  Junior Olympics are held in March for short course yard events and July for long course meter events.  This summer several local USA swimmers achieved this high honor and competed at Penn State in the Middle Atlantic Long Course Junior Olympics.  The following swimmers competed in the following events at Penn State at the end of July:

Shaun Smith:  50 m, 100 m, and 200 m freestyle, 100 m and 200 m fly, 200 individual medley, 100 m breaststroke
Lydia Smith:  50 m and 200 m freestyle and 50 butterfly
Kristina Reis: 50 m freestyle
Keith Reis:  50 m breaststroke
Emma Butzler:  50 m , 100 m,  and 200 m butterfly, 100 m breaststroke, 200 m individual medley, 200 m and 100 m freestyle, 50 m and 100 m backstroke.
Scotti Smith:  100 m and 200 m breaststroke and 200 m individual medley
"These swimmers have been in the water working hard since May", said WASC coach Sue Smith.  "This meet was a great opportunity for them to race against the top swimmers in the region".
If your child is interested in swimming for either USA team, contact Joel at joelblesh@gmail.com or call Andy at 484-2820 for the HAAC team or Lori at 570-337-9753 or visit www.swimwasc.com to inquire at WASC.

Jersey Shore Wins Mutiple Titles At Bald Eagle Swim League All Stars

Jersey Shore and Wellsboro have a healthy rivalry.  Up to 2010, the black and orange were at the top of their game, winning several Bald Eagle Swim League (BESL) Championships and dual meets over Wellsboro.  But for the past couple of years, it is now Jersey Shore that is trying to figure a way to regain form and topple Wellsboro in dual meets, Championships, and All-Stars.
Shore's Jamie Mason (swimmer on left) in dead heat
with Loyalsock's Julia Arnold in the girls 15-and-under
100 meter butterfly

Not only is there a team rivalry, but individual rivalries between the two clubs.   The one to watch at the moment is between Jersey Shore's 12-and-under Sam Keegan and Wellsboro's Jillian Berguson in the 50 breaststroke.  During the regular season, Berguson beat Keegan by 43/100s of a second.  Keegan turned the tables  and won by 22/100s at BESL Championships.  The two got to settle the series at the BESL All-Stars where Berguson won by just 21/100s of a second.   Keegan still captured a swimming title with a win in the 100 meter freestyle.  Her 12-and-under teammates also captured All-Star titles with Emma Butzler in the 100 meter individual medley, Gabbie Moore in the 50 meter backstroke, and Kendra White a dual winner in the 50 meter freestyle and butterfly.

Shore's Meeghan Keegan captured two events in the 8-and-under 25 meter breaststroke and butterfly while 15-and-over Jamie Mason won the 100 meter freestyle.  Keegan, along with Taylor Fleming, Gabbie Moore, Olivia Edler, and Mason easily won the girls 300 meter crescendo freestyle relay.

Jersey Shore's individual rivalries also exist closer to home.  Lock Haven's 10-and-under Avery Mahoney and Shore's Isabelle Griswold have fought each other tight, to the finish line, in the 25 yard freestyle throughout the summer swim season.  In the regular season match-up, Mahoney won by 64/100s of second but the time separation shrunk to 57/100s in their match-up in BESL Championships.  Their third match-up of the summer season occurred at All-Stars where once again, Mahoney held off Griswold, but this time only by 39/100s of a second.  Mahoney did go on to also win the 25 meter backstroke over Wellsboro's Caitlyn Callahan.

It is always fun to watch kids progress through the age groups over the years but is always somewhat sad to see their final swims as they age out of the league.  Kids grow up fast!  Below are short bios, from the 2012 Bald Eagle Swim League Championship program, for Jersey Shore's Alainah Rosencrance, Loyalsock's Bryan Nardone, Tri-Town's Duncan Frazier andf Alex Sullivan, Wellsboro's Carson Owlett and Nathan Weed, and Williamsport's Alexandra Isaacson.  Good luck in your exciting future.  Click on the pictures to enlarge.
