Reason #55 On Importance of Learning To Swim - Jumping Off Rattlesnake Rock , Again!

This is a continuing series in why everybody should learn how to swim as many activities take place around water.

Jumping off Rattlesnake Rock was so fun last week that it was worth bringing a couple of friends (that can SWIM) and mom on another 65 mile bike ride on the Pine Creek Rails-to-Trails.
start of the trek, left to right, Eric, Max, Jacob, and mom.
It was a humid day so there were several breaks throughout the ride to cool down.

The following 3 photographs show a sequence of jumping off of Rattlesnake Rock.

Calling All Athletes to the Swimming Pool

For those of you that read this blog and are not from central Pa, it is baseball madness right now.  The Little League World Series is taking place and it always generates excitement within the local comunities.  This year, even more so as a local team (out of the Lock Haven area) made the tournament.

So it is only fitting that the presidient and CEO of Little League Baseball had an editorial in this Sundays Williamsport Sun-Gazette.  It can be viewed by the article below (click to enlarge).  Basically, it is an article cautioning youth and parents on overuse injuries.

There are a couple of interesting take home items here for all athletes, outside and inside the swimming community.  He states that rest is crucial to youth sports (his concern is baseball) and that we should "order our boys and girls off the diamond and into the library or the swimming pool once or twice a week...".  Swimming (not competitive swimming) is a great way to relax and have fun.  Every child should be hitting the swimming pool at some time in the year.  The library comment is also very good as every child should be reading a book.

The other comment he makes is ".. children and teens must be encouraged to vary the sports they play with each season, so they can work alternate muscles and give taxed joints a chance to rest and recover"  So for those boys that wrestle and play football, come out for the swim team over the summer.  Girls and boys that play soccer in that fall might want to look at the winter swim team as a way to work some parts of the body that get overused.

Swimmers are not exempt from this idea of repetitive injuries and should look at playing soccer, track, cross-country, basketball, baseball, and wrestling during the off-season.  Check this Jersey Shore Swim blog on JS athletes who utilize different sports to prevent injury.  Don't forget to visit the library to work the brain!

Lewisburg Kids Triathlon

Several Jersey Shore and Lock Haven swimmers ventured down to Lewisburg to participate in the Lewisburg Kids Triathlon on Friday night, August 19.  Results can be viewed here and pictures can be viewed here (not posted at the time of this blog posting).  Below are some videos of area kids in various stages of the race.

It is only fitting that the triathlon starts off with swimmming.  The younger kids swam 2 widths of the pool while the older kids swam 50 yards or 100 yards.

Watching the kids transition is always interesting.  Pulling on shoes and shirts is a bit harder when wet.  Below, Jersey Shore's Alex B. takes his time transitioning from swimming to biking.

Jersey Shore's Jordan O. gets a little help from dad who has her shoes on before she even knows it.  Notice as she runs to the bike the wave of kids in that heat.  These waves went on for awhile.

After the bike, the triathletes must transition to the final leg, the run.  This is much easier as you just drop your bike and run.  Jersey Shore's Emma B. transitioning from bike to run.

The run is the hardest for many as they are pretty tired from sprinting the last two events.  Lock Haven's Jordy S. pounds the pavement as he sprints to the finish line.

For those interested, the Jersey Shore Kid's Triathlon is scheduled for July 20, 2012 while the Lewisburg Kids Triathlon is scheduled for August 17, 2012.

USA Swim Program Information Meeting

Plenty of athletes in Jersey Shore and the surrounding area look for that ‘edge’ to take them to the next level. Often, that edge is advanced training and more competitive competition.

Some Jersey Shore soccer players travel over to Beech Creek to participate in the Soccer Training Network, a year-round program that has professional coaching and a structured curriculum. Local wrestlers travel to Lock Haven’s Mat-Town, also a year round program that has top-notch coaching and training methods. Some Shore basketball players travel over to State College to participate in a travel AAU program while Shore softball players join up with central PA travel teams such as the Gravediggers to experience a high level of competition.

So where do swimmers go? Last year, Lock Haven University’s swim coach Andy Waeger started a USA swim program to improve the level of swimming in central Pennsylvania. With one year under his belt, the program has been very successful as he was able to produce a YMCA State Winner this past March.

If you are interested, there is going to be a family / informational team meeting on Wednesday 8/17 at 6pm at the Zimmerli Classroom #8. (this is the same building as the pool). Check it out!

Lock Haven and Wellsboro Write-Up

If the Jersey Shore team heading up to Wellsboro this past Tuesday were a boat, it would have been springing leaks all over the place.  Twenty-six swimmers could not make the trip and Shore’s head coach, Lee Thompson, was busy moving swimmers around to try and prevent the ‘boat’ from sinking.   Having watched Wellsboro’s best swim at the All-Star meet days earlier, Thompson tried to plug the empty holes and have a competitive line-up.   It was a strategy that almost worked but ultimately came up short in a 6-4 loss.
As the meet progressed, Wellsboro was handling the 8, 10, and-12-and under boys, 10-and-under girls, and 15-and-over boys.  Jersey Shore on the other hand was easily managing the 8 and 12-and-under girls, 14-and-over boys, and the 15-and-over girls.  The group that was fighting it out for control of the meet was the 14-and-under girls.  A Shore win would secure a tie for Jersey Shore and place them atop of the Bald Eagle Swim League standing (Wellsboro already had a tie with Loyalsock).   A Wellsboro win in this event would give them the regular season league team title.

The group started off on a strong note as Sapphire Naugle, Emma Butzler, Courtney Breon, and Olivia Bellomo won the 200 medley relay.  Although Wellsboro won the next event, the 50 freestyle, Breon and Naugle were able to go 2-3.  Butzler and Breon went on to capture the next 4 of 5 individual events.  But they couldn’t shake the competition as Wellsboro consistently placed 2nd and 3rd throughout the evening.  In each instance, Shore was only to pick up one point over Wellsboro.  By the end of the individual competition, Shore’s 14-and-unders were up 33-31.  The lead didn’t hold up as Wellsboro was able to take first and second in the final relay and finish up with an age group win at 40-34.
Lock Haven’s Amy Shadle pulls up to the wall as Michelle Haftl dives in the water to start the butterfly in the 200 medley relay.

The very next night was a different story as Jersey Shore and the Lock Haven Loggerheads met up for a make-up meet (rained out the week before).  Although Lock Haven head coach Joel Blesh has one of the programs larger teams in recent history, they are still outmanned when matching up to Jersey Shore.
Shore’s 10-and-under girls had a strong showing in several events as they were able to secure all three top spots.  Taylor Fleming, Jordon O’Connor, and Sadie Griswold went 1-2-3 in the 25 free and a similar combination won the 50 free with O’Connor, Cheyenne Gansell, and Griswold.  A whole new set of teammates, Sam Keegan, Jessica Creveling, and Emma Schoonmaker, replicated the 1-2-3 finish in the 25 yard breaststroke.
15-and-over boys catch some air on the dive for the 50 yard freestyle.

Mac Thompson in the 15-and-over boys took two firsts in back-to-back events; 50 free and 100 yard IM.  His teammates, Ian Endresen, Jonathon Weaver, and Austin White were able to go 1-2-3 in the 100 yard breaststroke respectively.  Lock Haven’s Phil Rodo won the 100 yard backstroke.

Lock Haven’s Ciera Strouse finishes the opening freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay and watches teammate Amy Shadle dive in to start the breaststroke leg

Jersey Shore Girls Win All-Stars, Team Takes Third Overall (July 24)

Whereas the regular dual season meets favor depth over talent, The Bald Eagle Swim League All-Star Meet is a showcase for talent. Dual meets allow each team to enter three swimmers where the All Star format only allows for one swimmer for each event. Jersey Shore has great depth in almost every age group, but a few teams within the league that have smaller numbers are able to produce some monster swimmers. Although Shore beat Loyalsock last week in a dual meet, ‘Sock as a team was able to place many of their selected swimmers in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd consistently in the All-Star meet.

Shore Girls Take Bald Eagle Swim League Championships (Saturday July 30)

One year winning does not establish a trend, but with Wellsboro winning the Bald Eagle Swim League Championships two years in a row, a new powerhouse may be emerging. Team Wellsboro scored 1447 points whereas Jersey Shore once again took second accumulating 1220.5 points. However, the Jersey Shore girls continue to dominate in several age groups and won overall in the girl’s team score over Wellsboro by 873 to 691. This point difference was a result of three dominating age groups who went undefeated this season. The 8 and 12-and-under girls and the 15-and-over girls remained unbeaten going into Championships and posted individual wins in several events.

The 100 yard freestyle for the 12-and-under girl’s best illustrated their ability to be competitive and swim fast. Shore teammates Emma Butzler, Olivia Edler, Hannah Stemler, Briar Lehman, Shawnell Fenstermacher, and Timber Merryman accumulated 62 points (compared to Wellsboro’s 18 points) as they captured 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 10th respectively. Butzler also went on to win the 100 individual medley and 50 fly where Edler secured a win in the 50 yard freestyle. The two later teamed up with Gabbie Moore and Kendra White to win the final 200 freestyle relay by almost 14 seconds over Wellsboro.

The 8-and-under girls didn’t capture as many of the top spots compared to the 12-and-unders but were still able to rack up points for the girls. The only individual winner was Isabelle Griswold in the 25 yard breaststroke but her teammates helped her pick up 34 points to Wellsboro’s 22 in that event. Griswold’s teammate’s Allison Moore, Sarah Misquitta, and Josie Gansell finished 3rd, 9th, and 11th respectively. Griswold and Moore did finish off their competition with a win over Wellsboro in the 100 yard freestyle relay with assistance from Courtney Lehman and Meaghan Keegan.

The majority of the 15-and-over girl’s individual events were won by Shore swimmers. Maddi Thompson won all three of her events; the 50 and 100 yard freestyle plus the 100 yard IM and Jamie Mason pulled into first over Tri-Town’s Ashley Mahaffey in the 100 butterfly. Loyalsock pushed Thompson and Mason plus Addison Crawley and Kortnee Blair in the 200 yard medley relay as Shore went onto win that race by 2.5 seconds.

Shore’s only first place in the 10-and-under girls came when Sam Keegan out-touched Wellsboro’s Catherin Craig in the 25 fly. On the boys side, their only win was the 200 freestyle relay with Mac Thompson, Steve Smeltzer, Derrick McPherson, and Evan Moore).

Lock Haven had a good showing with several of their younger age groups. The 8-and-under girls 100 medley relay with Evie Jane Rembold, Madison Bair, Makayla Sampson, and Haley Shadle finished ahead of Loyalsock and Jersey Shore. The 10-and-under boys of Jordan Sheets, Jonas Tomalonis, Thomas Cygan, and Logan Williams were able to capture both the 100 medley and freestyle relays. Williams also went on to win the 25 yard breaststroke over Jersey Shore’s Nash Berfield.
